General Purpose of Job: Responsible for providing leadership and professional expertise to manage the infection prevention program for Sparrow Health. Manages administrative and operational objectives for the infection prevention department. Make decisions regarding projects, programs and initiatives that support the objectives established by mitigating high risk issues to build an effective infection prevention program. |
Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Manage operating functions of the department with direct supervision over Infection Preventionists. Identify opportunities for improvement in departmental operations. Resolve issues swiftly and with minimal conflict. Makes decisions and provides directions to team members that support the goals and objectives established by the director. Responsible for all subordinate staff activities related to human resource management (hiring, promotion, salary changes, performance coaching, disciplinary actions, training and development, ensuring consistent application of organizational policies, etc.)
- Lead change and continuous improvement initiatives, with a specific focus on Healthcare Associated Conditions (HACs) across the institution as well as priorities identified in the Infection Prevention Surveillance and Control Plan. HACs are part of CMS Pay for Performance and Value Based Purchasing. Failure to meet targets results in withholding of CMS reimbursement and in some cases penalties. This data is publicly reported and impactful for other initiatives such as Leapfrog and USWNR.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to maintain compliance with regulatory standards (such as CMS and OSHA/MIOSHA) as well as accreditation standards (The Joint Commission IC Chapter). Failure to maintain it would result in loss of CMS deemed status as well as potential fines.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with peers and others within the Health System and across the University and Clinical Enterprise. Partner with Director to Establish unit mission, vision and goals in alignment with department and institution's strategic plan.
- Manage the development and implementation of infection prevention policies and procedures & lead the review and revision of institutional policies/procedures. Policies are critical for safe patient care required from a regulatory and accreditation perspective.
- Maintain current knowledge of Infection Prevention literature, guidelines and accreditation and regulatory standards as they related to Infection Prevention. Prepare period reports (present summary data, risk assessments, etc.)
- Provide backup leadership and professional experience for the Infection Prevention & Epidemiology Director. Can step in to work with Senior Leaders, surveyors and manage system issues that arise.

Job Requirements
General Requirements |
License / Certification: * Healthcare professions requiring licensure in the State of Michigan must have and maintain current licensure. * Board Certification in Infection Control (CIC) |
Work Experience |
* A minimum of 3 years of experience in infection prevention/related field. * Experience in data analysis, report generation and excellent verbal and written presentations. * Previous leadership experience preferred. |
Education |
* Bachelor's degree in nursing or relevant clinical field * Master's Degree in relevant field preferred. |
