Job Announcement

Provides county-wide outreach and in-library programming for children age birth-5 and caregivers to promote reading readiness. Schedules story time visits with children in Head Start classrooms, childcare centers and family child care homes. Creates publications for parents and preschool educators, manages the distribution of materials from the Lending Library and prepares and distributes materials for volunteer Storytime visits. Assists the Early Literacy Outreach Manager in supporting the needs of staff, outreach volunteers and customers. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL). Works under the direction of the Early Literacy Outreach Coordinator.

Schedule: This is a part-time job-share position working 20 hours per week. Scheduling flexibility is imperative. Standard hours may include day and/or evening hours to include weekdays and weekends. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library.

Salary: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($26.8219 - $35.7625) and will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised compensation range (Note: Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees).

Illustrative Duties

Answers informational and reference questions from customers using print and electronic resources;
Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology;
Advises and assists customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials;
Plans and provides programs and outreach to customers of all ages;
Maintains collection by weeding, marketing, and merchandising library materials;
Troubleshoots library computers and reports unresolved problems through proper channels;
Performs copy cataloging of library materials;
Identifies materials to be considered for addition to the library collection;
Remains current in resources, services and technologies in the information field;
May supervise volunteers.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university plus two years of experience working in a library, bookstore, educational or research setting.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid driver's license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus two years of professional experience in early childhood, elementary education or children's programming.
  • Knowledge of and experience with children's literature and early literacy concepts.
  • Experience assisting others with basic computer technology and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, email and various software packages such as Canva, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Experience leading training sessions with adults.
  • Experience creating and editing publications.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives with limited supervision; self-motivated and highly organized.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stoop, bend and reach. Ability to be physically active and stand for up to 3 hours. Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Incumbent must be able to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
