Electrician

Position Description:

This position is only open to current incumbents on the OMEE VII, Ft. Stewart, GA location.

Primarily performs preventative and corrective maintenance, repair and modification of interior and exterior electrical wiring, including the facility's Essential Electrical System (EES - Life Safety, Critical, Equipment branches), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, normal power distribution, exterior high voltage/low voltage electrical circuits/systems, and equipment associated with electrical components throughout the campus. Ensures all work complies with relevant codes and minimizes impact on patient care operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:



  • Perform repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of healthcare facility electrical systems, locating and diagnosing trouble in the electrical system or equipment.
  • Testing, installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of electrical equipment, such as emergency generators, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), isolation panels, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs) heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment.


  • General knowledge of fire alarm systems and nurse call systems.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in maintaining and repairing exterior and interior electrical wiring and components, adhering to strict safety protocols (LOTO, Arc Flash safety).
  • Must have the ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, riser diagrams, and control wiring diagrams that pertain to the electrical systems.
  • Must have the skill and knowledge to use all hand and power tools, test equipment and shop machines, aerial booms, and shop machines utilized by the craft.
  • Experience in electronic repair and maintenance of fire and security alarm systems.


  • Working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment.
  • Adhere strictly to hospital Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) protocols during all maintenance, repair, and installation activities.
  • Coordinate electrical work and shutdowns with facilities management and clinical department leaders to ensure patient safety and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Maintain the general cleanliness and appearance of assigned spaces and the workshop, assist the maintenance team, as required, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Respond to electrical emergencies and system failures, troubleshoot effectively, and restore power safely.
  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document all work performed, time/materials used, and compliance testing results.

Position Requirements

Knowledge of:



  • All appropriate safety practices for working with hand and power tools.
  • Electrical, electronics principles, and installation/maintenance practices for low and medium-voltage systems in a healthcare setting. National Electrical Code (NEC), particularly articles relevant to Healthcare Facilities (e.g., Art. 517), NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace), NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code), NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), relevant TJC/CMS requirements, and local/state codes. OSHA safety rules, including lockout/tagout.



Ability to:



  • Troubleshoot, repair, regulate, and control electrical systems and associated equipment.
  • Accurately determine time and materials required for a job.
  • Perform minor fabrication/installation for electrical equipment mounting and conduit runs. Coordinate and work with other staff members (including clinical and support staff) to achieve project deadlines.
  • Read and comprehend schematics, blueprints, and shop drawings.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Use hand and power tools and specialized electrical testing equipment in a safe manner.
  • Identify and resolve failures/alarms related to critical building electrical equipment promptly and safely. Ability to troubleshoot systems using electronics, computers, and software systems.
  • Use of computers for checking email, data entry on CMMS, and training.



Education and Experience:



  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a licensed electrician in a healthcare or similar regulated industrial setting working with essential power systems.



Licenses and Certification:

Required:




  • Documented Journeyman level or higher for respective position; or
  • Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program for Journeymen Electrician.
  • State Electrician's License (or Master's).
  • High school diploma/GED or higher education.
  • Valid driver's license



Preferred:



  • Hospital infection control procedures (ICRA)


  • Current certification/training in NFPA 70 and 70E.


  • NICET Fire Alarm certification (Level I or II)


Experience with multiple manufacturers' generators, ATS, and UPS systems.

Work Environment




  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and a full range of climatic weather conditions.
  • Work involves entering patient care areas, mechanical/electrical rooms, interstitial spaces, confined spaces, and rooftops.
  • Required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing and devices when working with hazardous chemicals and required Arc Flash PPE
  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including potential use of respirators and adherence to hospital dress codes and infection control attire.
  • Subjected to hazardous gases, high pressure gases, hot liquids, dirt, dust, and oil/grease.
  • Requires physical dexterity, standing, stooping, climbing, and lifting heavy objects to perform duties.
  • Must be physically able to work on ladders, scaffolds, platforms, roofs and in cramped equipment rooms and other confined spaces.


  • Excessive temperatures ranging from 10F to 120 F


  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials, requiring use of respirators and personal protective safety attire and equipment.


  • May require entering confined spaces such as ductwork, pits, and crawl spaces.
  • Lifting and carrying varies - dependent on location of equipment up to 30-40ft height.
  • Ability to push 50 pounds (maintenance equipment); ability to lift minimum of 50 pounds (supplies and equipment)
  • Must be able to pass background check and any health screenings required by the healthcare facility.
