Mechanical Technician

Berkeley Lab is hiring Mechanical Technicians to provide routine technical support in mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Under direct supervision, you'll follow set methods and instructions to perform standardized tasks using basic mechanical knowledge.

What You Will Do:



  • Perform technical tasks such as fabricating, assembling, machining, installing, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting components and systems used in scientific research, including accelerators, optics, vacuum systems, detectors, and cryogenics.
  • Learn to work with various metallic and non-metallic materials and processes.



Additional Responsibilities as Needed:



  • Use calculators for required measurements and calculations.
  • Use computers to access and document part, component, material, and specification information.



What is Required:

Mechanical Technician Level 1:



  • 1-2 years of experience with hand tools or in a machine shop.
  • Basic mechanical or electromechanical knowledge to complete assignments.
  • Skills in fabrication, assembly, machining, installation, operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with standard hand, power, and machine tools.


In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Technician Level 2:



  • 2-4 years of experience with hand tools or in a machine shop.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical or electromechanical troubleshooting, fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance.
  • Advanced experience using standard hand, power and machine tools.



Desired Qualifications:



  • AA in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent industry/military training.
  • Ability to interpret basic engineering drawings and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of mechanical parts, including sizes, tolerances, materials, and applications.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Valid California Driver's License.



Notes:



  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The expected hourly rate for the Mechanical Technician Level 1 position is $32.00 - $38.00, which fits into the full range of $28.65 - $41.52 hourly depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • The expected hourly rate for the Mechanical Technician Level 2 position is $38.00 - $46.00, which fits into the full range of $34.36 - $49.83 hourly depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Starting May 7, a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
