POSITION SPECIFICS

Health Microbiome Center in the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a Research Technologist Life Sciences-Intermediate Professional position. This unique role bridges the worlds of biological research and science communication, offering the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge microbiome and One Health initiatives while supporting outreach and educational programming.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide both scientific and communication support for the Center's research, outreach, and educational activities. The successful candidate will assist with the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals, develop educational curriculum and digital resources for diverse audiences, and serve as the primary point of contact for outreach activities. This role also plays a key part in servicing the Center's basic activities andenhancing the Center's media presence, event promotions, and digital communications, ensuring that the impact of our research reaches both academic and public communities. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in life science research, coupled with creativity and enthusiasm for education, science storytelling, and visual communication.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the development of outreach and educational materials, including laboratory protocol development and translation to classroom-ready curriculum.
  • Provide ongoing resource and technical support to high school and postsecondary educators as they integrate microbiome research activities into their classrooms.
  • Assist with professional development workshops, summer camps, and undergraduate research experiences.
  • Monitor media presence and news coverage related to the One Health Microbiome center.
  • Assist in the planning, promotion, and coordination of Center-sponsored events, workshops, seminars, other and public-facing science communication initiatives.
  • Develop content for social media, websites, brochures, and newsletters, and contribute to digital and print communications.
  • Design and produce visual and promotional materials, including flyers, infographics, and event signage. Maintain excellent organizational records.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in microbiome research, life sciences, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and/or science education.
  • Aptitude for research, critical thinking, and the ability to learn new scientific concepts and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in science communication, media, or public engagement.
  • Strong writing, editing, and visual communication skills.
  • Familiarity with social media management, website content creation, or graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, time management, and the ability to multitask.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Prior research and/or education experience a plus, but not necessary for this position.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $38,300.00 - $55,500.00.
