Job Summary

This position oversees functionality of equipment and data acquisition on collaborating dairy farms. The individual will also assist with manure stream sample collection, data capture, and animal observation data collection. The individual will manage data from various input sources, including equipment, laboratory analyses and project spreadsheets. The individual will provide content for reports and publications, management literature review logistics for project team and maintain all electronics with appropriate attention to cybersecurity.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Master's degree (or Bachelor's degree with 2 years' experience) in Animal Science, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Air Quality, Plant or Environmental Sciences or related field with skill set required.
  • 1 year of minimum experience in field or laboratory research.
  • Demonstrated experience with handling data in spreadsheets and statistical analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge in understanding of the nitrogen and carbon cycles and strong quantitative skills. Advanced knowledge in measuring on-farm emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases, volatile solids or nitrogen flows through dairy cattle production areas.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to work with a diverse team from different backgrounds and with varying skill levels.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, data analysis, and statistical software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of field work research experience preferred.
  • Experience working on commercial dairy facilities.
  • Experience with understanding air quality or other environmental monitoring techniques, variability of nutrient composition and effect of temperature and climate on nitrogen metabolism and loss pathways in manure.
  • Advanced knowledge in grant management.
  • Spanish speaking desirable.

Department Overview

The mission of the Department of Animal Science is to create and disseminate knowledge about animals for the betterment of animals, society, and the environment in California and beyond.

This position will work on a project responsible for determining greenhouse gas emissions pre- and post- implementation of a vermifiltration system for liquid manure management on commercial California dairies.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
