The Position

The Opportunity

The Therapeutic Area Lead plays a meaningful role in leading a team of Medical Directors/Medical Science Directors and/or MD/MSD Manager to develop, deliver, and execute the medical strategy for specific therapeutic areas, advocating the relevant medical perspective to drive progress and serving as a key member of the US Medical Affairs leadership community. They are accountable for the success of the company in key therapeutic areas, bringing deep medical expertise, innovation, and critical thinking to drive strategic planning and execution with a customer-centric approach, while also maintaining a comprehensive understanding of relevant clinical, market, and access landscapes for their assigned therapeutic area and building capabilities in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the synthesis and translation of scientific data/clinical situations into strategy and solutions, appreciating and navigating trade-offs within and beyond medical.

  • Proactively bring feasible options for evidence generation, medical communications, and customer engagement, with an understanding of unmet medical needs, and ensure execution aligned with the shared 5-year vision, 90-day priorities, and integrated customer plan.

  • Partner across the Medical Network, within US Medical internal functions, and with global colleagues to create and deliver options supporting short and long-term goals, providing perspective to avoid redundant efforts.

  • Lead the formation and execution of high-quality Phase IIIb/IV clinical trials and investigator-initiated research, consistently engaging with customers to understand their evolving medical needs and identifying knowledge gaps and opportunities for collaboration.

Who you are

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Post-graduate degree required (e.g. MD, PhD, PharmD)

  • 10+ years of pharmaceutical / biotechnology industry experience

  • Experienced medical affairs leader with neurology area expertise

  • Possess scientific credibility and enterprise thinking to provide proactive solutions to complex enterprise needs, with a sophisticated understanding of regulatory, medical practice, and economic environments impacting Roche/Genentech globally and within the US.

  • Demonstrate superb collaboration, influencing, and communication skills to build partnerships with cross-functional commercial, development, and global peers.

  • Show a successful track record of collaborating, coaching, and influencing outcomes in complex organizations and projects, embracing an agile mindset and the new digital healthcare landscape.

  • Understand corporate legal and compliance groups, finance, and large-scale budget development, management, and administration, with the ability to establish relationships and identify the needs of patients, providers, and payers.

Preferred Experience

  • 10 or more years of experience in Medical Affairs with neurodegeneration expertise

  • Have a strong academic/teaching background, with a comprehensive grasp of Phase I-III and/or Phase IV drug development, medical writing, data analysis, and clinical relevance principles.

Location / Travel Requirements

The position is located in South San Francisco. Business travel, by air or car, is required for regular internal and external business meetings.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $318,600 - 591,800. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
