Scientist 3- Translational Medicine (iPSC-derived models)

Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
May 23, 2025
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The Translational Medicine OMNI Biomarker Development department at Genentech provides translational science support to inform the development of novel personalized therapeutics in disease areas of Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases (OMNI) throughout all stages of research and development. Our biomarker strategies are designed to study the molecular pathways driving the disease and to establish the mechanism of action of our therapeutics. We focus on diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and pharmacodynamic biomarkers to enable our vision of "the right drug for the right patient at the right dose." We are expanding our focus to include reverse translation, leveraging insights from clinical data to refine preclinical models and enhance drug discovery efforts.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Scientist III to join Genentech's Translational Medicine team in South San Francisco. The candidate will collaborate with scientists to identify and validate therapeutic targets with an emphasis on supporting reverse translation efforts in Alzheimer's Disease. The role requires a PhD background with expertise in stem cell biology in order to build and apply disease-relevant in vitro models for perturbation screens.

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Developing disease-relevant in vitro human cell models (e.g. iPSC derived neurons/glia, co-cultures, organoids).

  • Characterizing models using bulk and single-cell omics, image-based phenotyping and functional assays.

  • Collaborating with computational scientists to analyze bulk and single-cell omics data from human tissues/fluids and in vitro models.

  • Discovering and validating candidate targets and associated biology by applying in vitro screens, with a focus on insights gained from clinical trial data.

  • Communicating findings to other scientists/manager and present at internal/external meetings.

  • Coordinating interdepartmental and external collaborations, especially those involving stem cell research and neurobiology, to facilitate reverse translation efforts.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD in Neuroscience, Stem Cell Biology, Cell Biology, Functional Genomics or a related field with a strong record of high-profile publications. At least 3 years of relevant experience post-PhD, particularly in human stem cell biology, and experience in applying clinical insights to preclinical research is desirable.

  • Extensive experience with iPSC-derived models (i.e. directed differentiations to various cell types, co-cultures, and organoids) and primary cell model systems. Familiarity and experience with iPSC cell engineering (including thorough iPSC QC/banking) is a plus.

  • Expertise in gene delivery (viral, non-viral) and genome editing with CRISPR.

  • Proficiency in basic biochemical methods and confocal microscopy.

  • Familiarity with mouse models of neurodegeneration and animal experimentation is a plus.

  • Familiarity with bulk and single-cell omics data analysis and interpretation is a plus.

  • Excellent teamwork, communication, time management, organization skills and ability to work independently.

  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills, creative problem-solving abilities and a passion in leveraging clinical data to inform preclinical research.
