DESCRIPTION

The Production Manager serves as a technical leader within the Campus Performances and Events Office (CPEO), providing a high level of expertise in all facets of event production and venue operations. This role leads and oversees the comprehensive technical and operational aspects of theater and live event productions, often requiring analysis and resolution of unique and complex challenges. The position functions with a high degree of autonomy and is responsible for formulating strategies, developing and implementing policies and procedures, managing resources, and administering budgetary allocations in alignment with organizational goals.

This position ensures that sound, lighting, video, and other production elements meet the artistic and operational needs of events at the amphitheater and other campus venues. The Production Manager coordinates and leads production planning, technical design, and execution for a wide range of events-including performance art, dance productions, festivals, and full-scale theatrical and music performances-applying industry best practices and maintaining technical excellence.

The role is responsible for operational oversight of venue systems including audio-visual equipment, stage and shop tools, and production inventories. The Production Manager trains, supervises, and schedules staff, contracted crew, and student technicians, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and efficient workload management. In the absence of the Senior Production Manager, this role assumes leadership of the team and all production operations across CPEO-managed venues.

Additionally, the Production Manager supports campus-wide programs and traditions and may serve in a variety of technical capacities based on seasonal and event-driven needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Mastery level knowledge in multiple technical theater production areas such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair / make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.. *A high level of understanding and skill to operate lighting, video, and audio systems to produce theatrical performances.

  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills to work successfully with clients to produce high quality events that meet client needs and appropriately represent the campus.

  • Demonstrated negotiation, analytical and research skills to interpret data, prepare conclusions and successfully negotiate terms and conditions of contracts and proposals that are in the best interest of the institution.

  • Knowledge of crowd management, crowd safety protocols, security and emergency procedures related to small, medium and large-scale gatherings.

  • Demonstrated ability to hire, train, and manage student employees.

  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies. *Skilled in the ability to understand and translate technical documents for other nontechnicalstaff. Ability to give clear directives and use independent, rational judgment to make optimal decisions.

  • Strong working knowledge of University and collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations. *Strong knowledge of OSHA policies, EH&S safety regulations, and safety equipment.

  • Strong knowledge / skills in all aspects of financial and personnel administration. * Experience developing budgets, operating spreadsheet software (Excel), and producing timely reports. Well versed in developing staffing schedulesand performance management.

  • Strong problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills. *Established skill in analyzing information, problems, situations and procedures to define the problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors and formulate logical and objective conclusions.

  • Thorough organizational skills.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet event needs. This position works late nights and on weekends regularly as required.

  • The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
