Overview

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the safety and direction of staff assigned to the functional areas of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fleet management, grounds maintenance, and/or other operations. Coordinates the efficient maintenance of facilities, including installation, modification, monitoring, operation, testing, and servicing of equipment and systems in a cost-effective manner. This includes daily supervision, monitoring, and coaching of employees' expectations to ensure a safe and productive workforce in accordance with contract task requirements and applicable policies and procedures. Focuses on employee safety, work planning, corrective action program support, training, resource scheduling and planning, procurement of materials and equipment for installations, and performance management.



Responsibilities

    Management and Leadership: Provide daily supervision, work direction, and guidance for the union workforce assigned to the functional areas of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fleet management, grounds maintenance, and/or other operations. Perform daily assignment of tasks and perform field walkdowns to ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Interview and hire personnel, assess skills and implement training. Participate in disciplinary actions and union grievance meetings.
  • Safety and Compliance: Conduct routine toolbox talk safety meetings and implement safety training. Complete activity hazard analysis and work plans necessary to communicate hazards and mitigate risk to employees. Participate in facility inspections, incident investigations, and occurrence reporting.
  • Planning and Scheduling: Supervise and coordinate maintenance, installation, modification, monitoring, operation, repairing, testing, and servicing of equipment and systems. Conduct Plan-of-the-Day meetings with technicians and applicable personnel to discuss work assignments and associated hazards to mitigate risks to the employee(s), the equipment and the environment.
  • Technical and Maintenance: Provide technical data and evaluation for components, equipment, and systems consistent with engineering plans, layout, and contract requirements. Support engineering proposal development, provide input and technical content review.
  • Administrative: Monitor, review, and approve employee time sheet entries. Ensure hours are recorded correctly to the correct project codes. Complete material purchase requests, track deliveries, and ensure that they are staged at job sites to maximize technician efficiency. Provides direct support to the Facilities Site Manager with the development of contract deliverables such as periodic work planning and status reports.
  • Initiate and participate in employee disciplinary process in compliance with established policies and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET with at least five (5) years relevant experience, and general industry OSHA 10 safety training or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a supervisor who has demonstrated the ability to lead and manage teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, plus organizational, time management and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs.
  • Steward the organizational culture with a focus on teamwork and commitment to service amidst a diverse colleague and customer base.
  • Ability to quickly adapt focus, adjust schedule and problem solve to meet evolving work demands and needs of the Facilities Site Manager and other stakeholders.
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also work independently and balance multiple competing priorities and tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational/technical training beyond high school and ten (10) years' relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree in an industrial technical or similar field and (5) years' relevant experience.
  • OSHA 30 or equivalent level of general industry safety training.
  • Experience managing a union workforce and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Prior experience in working on and managing employees in support of a government contract.
  • Good interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, effective communication skills, exceptional customer service skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience with computer based timekeeping and online training.

Conditions of Employment

  • Pass a post-offer, pre-placement drug test and physical examination, medical history check, pre-employment criminal background check, and have a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • Possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a site security badge for access to the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) sites.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Duties may be a combination of administrative sedentary tasks and more physical work with some exposure or risk to physical hazards which require following basic safety precautions.
  • The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to areas that require the use of personal protective equipment such as protective suits, safety glasses with side shields, mandatory hearing protection, work shoes/boots, etc.
  • Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
  • Work environment may be inside buildings, labs, or outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and/or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and/or have exposed moving components.
  • Able to lift heavy equipment (up to 25 pounds), stand for long periods of time, bending or twisting of the body, and repetitive movements of the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, and fingers.

Integrated Safety Management

  • Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures applicable to the job.
  • Be knowledgeable and maintain awareness of associated ES&H hazards and work safely in accordance with hazard controls.

  • Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
  • Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
  • Attend all safety meetings, participate in ES&H/ISM program activities, and stay current with assigned required training.

Hours of Work

Shift hours are determined by contract, typically Monday through Friday daylight schedule. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
