Berkeley Institutes for Data Science (BIDS) is a home for data-intensive research, open-source software, & data science training programs and is an integral part of UC Berkeley's College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). Our programs and initiatives are designed to facilitate collaboration across an increasingly diverse and active data science community of domain experts from the life, social, and physical sciences, as well as methodological experts from computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics. Since its launch in 2013, BIDS has cultivated an environment of open inquiry and discovery for data-intensive research. This position plays a critical role in shaping and sustaining open, collaborative computing environments that support cutting-edge research and campus-wide technology initiatives at UC Berkeley and beyond. This is funded through the Open Platform for Powering Science and Society (OPPSS) Initiative [https://cdss.berkeley.edu/news/berkeley-launches-agile-metabolic-health-and-open-platforms-initiative], the role blends strategic technical planning with hands-on development and system design to support platforms like JupyterHub, JupyterHealth, JupyterLab, MyST, and related open-source tools. The successful candidate brings a deep understanding of both research-driven software needs and long-term infrastructure strategies, ensuring that campus and global open science communities have reliable, extensible, and future-ready environments. This role also involves investigating emerging technologies, contributing to community-driven projects, and advising leadership on how to align evolving technical capabilities with institutional and cross-institutional goals. 25% Designs and prototypes workflows to translate Jupyter-based research applications into secure, clinician-facing EHR-integrated applications using SMART on FHIR standards. Builds tools and templates inspired by Binder to support packaging, testing, and deployment of visualizations and algorithms in research and/or clinical environments. 15% Collaborates with researchers & students to plan, develop, and deploy scientific software aligned with best practices in research computing. Leads efforts to apply modern tools and workflows that promote reproducibility, sustainability, and cross-disciplinary usability. Is accountable for maintaining high-quality, tested, and well-documented code across the tools and platforms they steward. 15% Develops new capabilities in key parts of the Jupyter ecosystem, including JupyterHub, JupyterLab, JupyterHealth, and MyST, to advance the state of the art in open, collaborative and reproducible research across scientific disciplines, with emphasis on topics central to the mission of BIDS and related campus centers. 15% Leads community and sustainability efforts for the JupyterHealth open-source platform. Manages GitHub repositories, documentation, contribution workflows, and onboarding resources to foster an inclusive and scalable open-source project. Collaborates with stakeholders to promote adoption, build community engagement, and ensure long-term viability of the platform. 10% Supports the deployment of open systems for hosted computing environments in the Jupyter ecosystem. Often serves as advisor to deployments, on and off campus. Consults during planning stages to design and implementation. 10% Maintains and develops the open source JupyterHub ecosystem of deployment tools for open and reproducible software. Reviews and supports open source contributions. Mentors new and aspiring contributors. Develops the JupyterHub contributor and user communities. 5% Applies advanced IT architecture concepts to function as the highest level technical expert. Often serves as consultant to management. May lead or provide guidance to large development team in design of highly complex software systems. Advises on selection of technological choices with regards to deploying and hosting software services, and publishing computational communications. 5% Supports packaging and deployment of research software. Contributes to public infrastructure via Github and conda-forge. Advises research groups on packaging and distributing research software, including via PyPI, conda, container images, etc. Required Qualifications

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $177,500 - 233,900. Conviction History Background
