Senior Software Engineer

VizQL Server is the service at the heart of Tableau's Analytics capabilities. Our team is on a mission to ensure customers have a performant, reliable experience with our product when hosted at high scale. The Portable Sessions & Workbook Management team is specifically responsible for ensuring user session state can be moved between nodes. This capability is crucial so that we can achieve high scalability of our service and high durability for users' work. Your work in this role will directly improve the customer experience and enhance the value of Tableau's brand. This impacts our growing cloud-based Analytics community in Tableau Cloud and Public, as well as our larger Enterprise customer.

Some of the things you'll do include...

  • Design and implement features that ensure regular persistence of users' in-progress work while optimizing system performance and use of resources.

  • Define and build user-facing features to load views of in-progress work as well as backend features to seamlessly reconstitute Tableau workbook state when user sessions are moved between nodes.

  • Play a key role in evolving our codebase into efficient and highly scalable services, introducing new API's, influencing API standards, system design, service integration testing and operational best practices.

  • Understand and improve the performance and scaling characteristics of technically challenging C++ and Java code backing Tableau's core Analytics functionality.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of AI concepts such as large language models (LLMs) and agentic AI, with experience leveraging AI tools in both design and development workflows.

  • Collaborate with other team members and across teams to achieve increasingly high standards of engineering and operational excellence.

Who you are...
  • Experienced. You have experience developing high-scale, highly-available services in cloud-hosted environments. You are well-versed in modern DevOps practices for supporting services in production and in techniques for building robust, fault-tolerant distributed systems.

  • Technical: You are proficient in C++ and JAVA, and comfortable working with complex, multithreaded codebases. You bring strong expertise in API design and data modeling. Familiarity with both Linux and Windows environments is preferred, along with an understanding of AI concepts such as large language models (LLMs), agentic AI, and associated tooling.

  • Strong Communicator. You distill complex technical information down to the key elements and communicate both design ideas and technical details effectively.

  • Relentlessly High Standards. You are not satisfied by the status quo and continually inspire those around you to improve the quality of our systems, code and engineering practices. You consistently work toward pragmatic solutions that delight customers while also evolving and improving quality.

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $157,600 to $216,700.
