Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Office of University Counsel represents the University, which entails providing legal advice and counsel to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the administration, faculty, and staff on legal matters involving or affecting the institution. We advise the University administration on a broad range of initiatives, issues, and policy matters, and serve as a liaison between the University and its related and affiliated entities on legal and policy issues. We also assist with program implementation and provide legal and policy training for internal University audiences and educational programs for legal audiences and general audiences outside the institution on matters affecting the University and higher education in general. We engage in crisis and opportunity management and preventative counseling, including the identification of high risk activities and enterprises conducted by the University and the articulation of methodologies or strategies for coping with the risks. Our Office is responsible for selecting and supervising any outside counsel engaged by the institution. Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy, after extensive training period.
UNC Chapel Hill Employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Executive Assistant position will directly assist members of the Office of University Counsel (
OUC) in a wide variety of legal projects and office management functions. This position supports the advocacy team, including the Associate Vice Chancellor and Senior University Counsel for Litigation, the Senior University Employment Law Counsel, the University Litigation Counsel and 4-5 additional attorneys. The Executive Assistant will manage document review and production related to discovery obligations, internal investigations, subpoenas, and other legal matters, including redactions of privileged information, tracking all Tort Claims reported to
OUC, and initial informational intake on those claims. This includes representing
OUC and directly interfacing with appropriate authorities across campus, and with the public, to obtain necessary information.
The Executive Assistant with facilitate the flow of work within the office, including managing time, calendars, telephone calls, explaining policies and procedures, and processing incoming and outgoing mail and email for assigned professional staff. They will be responsible for scheduling committee meetings, conference calls, webinars, and other meetings/presentations for assigned professional staff, planning and setting up these events, including arranging for IT support, and assisting in preparation of agendas, attachments, and other necessary documents. The position involves occasional legal research; responsibility for collecting and compiling information and documents from campus and external offices, preparing initial drafts of documents and reports, coordinating the assembly and production of final documents and reports as requested by the professional staff; and working with all other administrative support staff within the
OUC as needed. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and three years of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or Associate's degree in secretarial science, business administration, or a related discipline and one year of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience ; or Bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience working in a law firm is strongly preferred.
Experience working in state and/or federal administrative agencies.
Experience using Connect Carolina, Concur, and Relativity are a plus.
Prioritize teamwork and emotional intelligence.
Experience working in a university legal office setting. |
