POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Day Camp Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Kankakee Corps

REPORTS TO: Youth Specialist Director

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt, Hourly

STATUS TYPE: Temporary Part Time

PAY GRADE: 201

PAY RANGE: $15.00

OUTCOMES

Work under the direction of the Youth Specialist Director to ensure that the Day Camp is in keeping with the overall plans, goals, and directions of the Corps.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. Take part as a leader to youth in regard to their daily class rotation and field trips.
  2. Assist as directed with set-up, registration time, opening, closing and clean-up.
  3. Understand that the overall theme of the Day Camp will have a Christian emphasis.
  4. Attend the orientation prior to the start of Day Camp, debriefing and the final musical program.
  5. Complete mandated training courses in compliance with organization standards. i.e., Safe From Harm, Mandated Reporter, Harassment Prevention, etc.
  6. Other duties as assigned as related to Day Camp.



REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Under the direct supervision of the Youth Specialist Director. In the absence of the Youth Specialist Director to be under the supervision of the Corps Officer.

This individual relates to, and interacts with, a wide range of contacts both within and outside The Salvation Army. In these contacts, they act as a representative of the Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE



  • Must have High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience of working with children, preferred.



COMPETENCIES



  • Must be able to give direction and guidance to children clearly and in a respectful tone.
  • Must be able to receive verbal and/or written instructions from supervisors.
  • Understand and uphold that Day Camp overall will have a Christian emphasis.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • A commitment to the mission of the Salvation Army.
  • Willing to work a sporadic schedule of mornings, afternoons and evenings. Schedule will depend upon youth center programs and activities.



POSITION LIMITATIONS



  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Day Camp Director informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time; use hands and fingers; communicate; move; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel, or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in using standard office equipment and PC.
  • The work environment for this position includes indoor and outdoor environments with a low to high noise level.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
