JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide knowledge and expertise in operation and support of one or more sectional safety programs and compliance with regulatory agencies and national guidelines in the Office of Safety & Business Continuity.

The Fire Safety Specialist will assist with system testing, manage inspection data in platforms such as Safety Stratus or FAMIS, and coordinate fire drills and life safety training. They will also serve as a field representative during AHJ visits and support post-incident investigations and after-action reporting. Their presence will help reduce nuisance alarms, enforce safety protocols with contractors, and ensure quicker turnaround for corrective actions.

1. Review life safety and fire protection plans and conduct inspections of various types of campus buildings according to the applicable fire codes and Joint Commission requirements. Must conduct the inspection in a professional and efficient manner and clearly communicate the deficiencies to the appropriate persons in writing.

2. Research and apply the technical requirements of all applicable life safety and fire protection codes in order to appropriately answer questions from staff and contractors.

3. Troubleshoot and perform maintenance/ repair work as necessary or oversee a contractor in order to maintain all campus fire protection systems.

4. Develop, conduct, or supervise training courses tailored to appropriate departmental groups within UT Southwestern regarding fire safety.

5. Adhere to work schedules in order to accomplish tasks and projects assigned by management.

6. Prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies which include but are not limited to fires, flooding, and hazardous materials incidents. The use of personal protective equipment including hazardous entry (flame and chemical) suits and respiratory protection up to and including self-contained breathing apparatus is required. Training to achieve and maintain certifications and participation in all types of emergency and non-emergency drills is required.

7. Individual will be on-call or emergency situations may require the individual to respond to campus outside of set work schedule. This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets.

8. Performs administrative tasks to assist with program management and/or manage projects.

9. Position requires periods of standing, walking long distances, bending, lifting, climbing.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    High School Diploma or equivalent or
    Associate's Degree in safety related field or
    Bachelor's Degree in safety related field


  • Experience
    5 years directly related safety experience with High school or
    3 years directly related safety experience with Associate's degree or
    No experience with Bachelor's degree or
    Pertinent Military experience may be considered for some of the required experience


Preferred



  • Licenses and Certifications
    Professional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty


JOB DUTIES



  • Investigates safety and environmental incidents, identifying causes and how to prevent their recurrence.
  • Ensures employee health & safety standards are met in all areas of the organization.
  • Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and procedures.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficiencies.
  • Ensures proper use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
  • Provide assistance and safety training to departments.
  • This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
