Language Interpreter

New Hanover County is seeking a Spanish and English Language Interpreter for the Health and Human Services Agency. Responsibilities include assisting in carrying out language program activities and services on site; interpreting between customers and HHS staff both in the agency and various locations in the community; translations of various documents such as safety plans and program applications; addressing inquiries of the public regarding the operations and activities of programs and services available through the department; and performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Essential Duties:

• Translates written documents from English to another language, based on area of assignment, and from that language to English that are culturally sensitive and linguistically accurate.
• Assists in carrying out program activities and services on site, via telephone, or through home visits.
• Ensures that interpretations are accurate, complete, and conveyed with clarity during interviews, meetings, appointments, and other interactions, maintaining impartiality and confidentiality.
• Maintains records of interpretation assignments, with dates and times and any relevant information regarding the interaction or its content.
• Assists individuals in understanding, completing, and accessing documents, services, and resources.
• Assists other teams with administrative support duties, as needed.
• Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
• Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Required Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent, and one (1) year of language interpretation in the language required based on area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the specific position as listed above.

• Fully bilingual in oral interpretation and written translation of Spanish and English.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

• Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application.
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
• Medical Interpreter Certification (all four levels of Interpreter certification) preferred.
• Must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish
