Position Overview

Position Summary
Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso is seeking a full-time mathematics faculty member who will also serve as the Department Chair of Mathematics. This is a leadership role that combines teaching responsibilities with administrative oversight of the department. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a full course load (12 credit hours per semester), maintain 10 hours of on-campus office hours weekly, and lead the department in areas such as curriculum development, part-time faculty supervision, assessment, scheduling, and student success initiatives. A consistent on-campus presence is required to support instruction, student engagement, and program coordination.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching & Faculty Duties

  • Teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester (fall and spring), with a strong emphasis on in-person instruction. Online formats may supplement but not replace live instruction.
  • Maintain 10 posted office hours per week on campus to provide direct student support and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Customize and update course syllabi and materials aligned with current curriculum goals.
  • Design and deliver courses that meet Quality Matters (QM) standards; complete QM training within the first year of hire.
  • Engage in student recruitment and retention activities.
  • Submit all required documentation and reports on time, including syllabi, rosters, grades, and assessment data.
  • Participate in campus committees and events.
Department Chair Duties
  • Provide academic leadership for the Mathematics department.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support part-time and adjunct math faculty.
  • Oversee course scheduling, classroom assignments, and textbook selection.
  • Lead curriculum development and updates in collaboration with faculty and the Vice President of Student Learning.
  • Coordinate and assess student learning outcomes and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Serve as a liaison between the department and administration, advocating for departmental needs.
  • Manage department communications and ensure compliance with institutional policies and deadlines.
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Mathematics or closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Mathematics from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to teach on campus with regular student interaction.
  • Willingness to take on a leadership role and fulfill administrative responsibilities as department chair.
Preferred:
  • Terminal degree in Mathematics or a related field.
  • Experience with community college instruction, especially with diverse and rural student populations.
  • Prior experience as a department chair, lead instructor, or academic coordinator.
  • Proficiency with classroom and online technologies, including adaptive learning platforms.
  • Experience developing curriculum, evaluating course effectiveness, and leading assessment initiatives.
  • Online teaching and course design experience, preferably aligned with Quality Matters standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to lead a team of educators.
  • Understanding of the role and mission of rural community colleges and the needs of non-traditional learners.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to provide vision and leadership for department programs, student learning, and student completion initiatives
  • Ability to ensure instruction is progressive, innovative, of the highest quality, and compatible with the goals and objectives of the college.
  • Ability to communicate closely with the Vice President of Student Learning and Success keeping him/her appraised of activities within the department and participate as an active member of the Academic Council.
  • Ability to communicate closely with department personnel keeping them informed of any department, campus, community, state, or federal issue affecting them.
  • Ability to assist students who are seeking a degree or certificate within the department with course selections

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work has daily moderate/medium physical demands that at times requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work hours are variable based upon the needs to the college, with evenings and some weekends required.
  • Work is predominantly indoors, with approximately 10% outdoors.
  • Work involves exposure to potentially hazardous conditions with fumes, odors, and toxic products. Employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens
