Product Engineer (Liberty Lake, WA)

The Product Engineer position, based in Liberty Lake, WA, will be working within the hardware product development team. This team designs and develops reading devices for Itron's automatic meter reading systems. The position will be involved with both initial product development and sustaining engineering activities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate all sustaining engineer activities at the product level to ensure the manufacturability, reliability and quality of the products.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining BOM structure, component specifications and test and manufacturing procedures necessary to manufacture the product.
  • Coordinate any engineering change orders associated with product changes.
  • Responsible for technical activities with contract manufacturers including coordinating manufacturing test activities.
  • Providing engineering support for component obsolescence issues and product compliance.
  • Coordinate technical discussions with new and existing suppliers.
  • Coordinate completion of testing associated with regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Launch new products into manufacturing.
  • Establish and maintain product service activities and discuss field quality issues with customer support.
  • Support cross-functional project teams including R&D, Quality Assurance, Supplier Quality, Planning, Purchasing, Regulatory, Marketing and Manufacturing to maintain and improve products.
  • Collaborate with other departments and external vendors to make sure the product meets the requirements.
  • Evaluating returns data, manufacturing test yield and making improvements to the product to improve both.
  • Coordinating product prototypes and testing them for safety, durability, and effect.
  • Continually improve the products for safety, quality and reliability.
  • Be familiar with the entire product development cycle.
  • Identify opportunities to maximize productivity and achieve cost-reduction.
  • Supporting and leading manufacturing process improvements

Required Skills & Responsibilities:

  • A Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Excellent analytical and design skills, creativity and advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and electrical mechanical products and components.
  • Experience analyzing quality metrics and statistical tools (Cpk, PPAP, etc.) to allow analysis of manufacturing test data.
  • Experience leading teams towards common goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of design software.
  • Familiar with firmware and software development, release and regression testing.
  • Experience with a wide variety of environmental testing.
  • Familiarity with radio frequency terminology and operation.
  • Familiarity with printed circuit board assembly, solder and inspection processes.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing test fixtures and systems.
  • Experience procuring parts for proto builds.
  • Familiarity with various regulatory compliance requirements (FCC, IC, UL, ROHS).
