UCSC Extension provides professional training that reflects the academic rigor of the University of California and the hands-on, roll-up-your-shirtsleeves practicality of Silicon Valley culture. Developed with guidance from key industry leaders and academic experts, Extension's certificate programs match the economic demands of industry, from engineering to business, education to bioscience, and technology to design.

Academic Services oversees program and course development and supervises faculty instructors. The department includes 36 Certificate Programs divided among Engineering and Technology, Business Management, Education, Design, and Biosciences units. Academic Services' Curriculum Planning Program Manager plays a pivotal role in leading curriculum planning processes, coordinating course development, supporting academic quality, and aligning program offerings with institutional goals and industry demands.

JOB SUMMARY

The Curriculum Planning Program Manager provides strategic leadership in the planning, development, and management of professional and continuing education programs at UCSC Extension. Reporting to the Director of Academic Services, this position operates with a high level of autonomy and expertise to oversee the full lifecycle of curriculum and academic operations, including program implementation, course scheduling, and instructional support across multiple disciplines.

This role serves as both a curriculum and program management expert, ensuring that offerings align with university policies, accreditation standards, and workforce needs. The incumbent evaluates and recommends program structures, analyzes enrollment trends, and guides curriculum review processes in collaboration with the Academic Senate. They also lead efforts to enhance program quality, instructional delivery, and operational efficiency.

In addition to curriculum oversight, the Curriculum Planning Program Manager manages key academic systems and databases, supervises junior staff as needed, and resolves complex logistical and instructional challenges. The role works closely with program directors, managers, instructors, advisory boards, and campus partners to ensure high-impact, student-centered learning experiences in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $88,560 - $95,200/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

25% - Course Scheduling & Enrollment Management

  • Coordinate the schedule of classes with the Program Manager and Program Coordinator for selected departments and academic programs.
  • Identify potential conflicts with other required courses for special programs.
  • Develop schedules for international students and special programs.
  • Manage ongoing schedule changes throughout the enrollment period.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure published course information is up to date.
  • Oversee and check quarterly course evaluation processes.
  • Lead in Curriculum Analyst processes and train the team in new processes.

25% - Curriculum Development & Planning

  • Facilitate new course approval and curriculum revisions through interactions with College Policy, Academic Senate, or similar organizations.
  • Implement curriculum development quality and service standards.
  • Review course approvals to ensure alignment with relevant Academic Senate policies and SIS guidelines.
  • Maintain and update department course material information.
  • Facilitate the routing of course approval materials to the Academic Review Committee and UCSC Academic Senate.
  • Develop best practices for communication regarding course and program approvals.
  • Provide administrative and analytical support to PCE units.
  • Apply discretion in handling sensitive program or course issues.

15% - Instructor Management

  • Consult with instructors, support staff, IT, and instructional designers on course delivery methods.
  • Update course numbers in master tables and other documents.
  • Monitors student evaluation feedback and assists the Program Director in improving deficiencies in courses/programs.
  • Serve as the primary backup for grade change facilitation.
  • Review instructor compliance training for completion.

20% - Curriculum & Program Analysis

  • Lead and advise on enrollment management using systems like Campus Marketplace and Quick Admit.
  • Audit courses and certificate programs in student information systems (e.g., Higher Reach).
  • Prepare reports for student information systems and web proofing.
  • Maintain records and process transactions related to professional memberships for certificate programs.
  • Monitor enrollment and revenue for courses and Certificate Programs and make recommendations for program improvement.

15% - Collaboration & Administrative Duties

  • Collaborate with Program Directors, Program Manager, Program Coordinator, and Program Chairs on curriculum and planning decisions.
  • Work with APO, ITS teams to improve course management processes.
  • Respond to curriculum and policy-related inquiries from staff and instructors.
  • Participate in committees, projects, and unit meetings.
  • Collaborate with the UNEX Senior Business Analyst on system testings and applications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Understanding of curriculum design, course development, and assessment techniques in professional and continuing education settings.
  • Knowledge of best practices in adult education, online and hybrid learning models, and instructional methodologies.
  • Knowledge of research methods, program evaluation strategies, and the ability to analyze enrollment trends, student outcomes, and faculty performance.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), curriculum management tools, and data visualization software.
  • Skill in working with industry professionals, faculty, and advisory boards to align curriculum with workforce needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with faculty, advisory boards, and institutional leadership.
  • Proficiency in writing reports, proposals, and curriculum documentation.
  • Ability to manage curriculum planning, updates, and program initiatives with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess program needs, anticipate challenges, and propose innovative solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and initiatives simultaneously in a fast-paced professional education environment.
  • Capacity to analyze and interpret enrollment data, student feedback, and labor market trends to make informed curriculum decisions.
  • Ability to navigate changes in educational policy, technology, and industry requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong ability to manage documentation, accreditation requirements, and compliance with university policies.
  • Familiarity with UC policies, accreditation standards, and state/national education regulations, particularly those governing professional education.
