The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a passionate and strategic Senior Manager, Prospect Research to join the Office of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships within the Advancement team.

In response to evolving current events impacting research and innovation in the United States and around the world, scientists, engineers, and others are increasingly turning towards AAAS for leadership and community. AAAS's ability to be the leading voice for science that the times demand depends upon robust philanthropic support. The Senior Manager, Prospect Research is the engine that drives AAAS's fundraising efforts, charting a course for success by organizing, prioritizing, and tracking the success of fundraising outreach. This position will join a fast-paced and collegial team committed to supporting AAAS's mission to advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all.

What You'll Do

Prospect Research and Identification:



  • Identifies prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors to support funding priorities, assessing giving potential, organizational and individual linkages, and philanthropic motivation.
  • Reviews annual fund gifts to identify prospects for upgrades, populate travel lists, and add to prospect pipeline.
  • Builds a donor pipeline by independently identifying other top-priority prospects, based on organizational priorities.
  • Produces in-depth, accurate donor/prospect profiles for AAAS leadership and program/Advancement staff outlining capacity/affinity/philanthropic history/target giving, as well as briefing documents and other research materials.
  • Conducts both manual and automated wealth screenings, relationship mapping, and other research using all available prospect research tools to segment and prioritize potential prospects.
  • Monitors top prospects via news alerts and push technology and shares relevant updates with team members and colleagues.


Prospect Management:



  • Serves as team lead for prospect management process, implementing and refining prospect management system as needed.
  • Develops reports and systems to assist staff in rating, screening and developing strategies for donors and prospects and for tracking success.
  • Coordinates regular prospect management meetings with front line fundraisers and/or program staff.
  • Assists with tracking cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts for individual, corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Responsible for updating Raiser's Edge NXT with relevant donor information based on the research conducted and input from colleagues and volunteers.
  • Assists with evaluating new and existing research software and services; stays current and fully informed about software, systems and trends that may enhance the prospect research functions of the office; trains staff on these products as necessary.
  • Serves as primary point of contact with new and existing prospect research vendors and Blackbaud to manage relevant accounts.


Minimum Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus 5 years of related work experience.
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze donor/prospect information and make informed recommendations regarding strategies and actions.
  • Ability to use research tools (Google, membership database, DonorSearch, and other resources) strategically, and compile relevant donor/prospect information in a useful and clear way.
  • Proficiency with Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Energetic and enthusiastic self-starter.
  • Creativity, curiosity, high energy level, and an enthusiasm for meeting and working with a wide range of individuals. Ability to manage up.
  • Intuitive and strategic thinker. Strong decision-making skills, tactful, good listener, willingness to search out answers, ability to recognize when others need to be involved in activities or decisions.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, set and meet goals and deadlines.

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $80,000 - $100,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
