THE POSITION

Are you interested in starting a new chapter in your career? The Department of Revenue is on the lookout for a Taxpayer Service Information Trainee with a strong work ethic and exceptional organizational skills. Within this role, you will participate in 6 month formal, informal, and on-the-job training program to develop the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to assist taxpayers with the review, interpretation, and explanation of Pennsylvania State tax laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Taxpayer Service Information Trainee, you will receive instructions on providing effective customer service, the use of a variety of technologies, and related technical and non-technical issues. Your customer service skills will be key as you provide verbal responses to taxpayer inquiries received by telephone. Inquiries are generally related to tax filing requirements, taxability issues, attainment of returns, requests for assistance in completing tax forms and related schedules, the status of return and claim processing, as well as coupon and forms requests. Work includes performing mathematical calculations of tax liabilities, reviewing alleged account discrepancies, and providing a solution to resolve the issues. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Making corrections to taxpayer account information
  • Answering questions pertaining to tax filing and payment obligations
  • Documenting taxpayer history
  • Maintaining general knowledge of department technologies
  • Identifying and referring taxpayers to other tax agencies if needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of a 6-month in-office training. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of experience in the delivery of technical services and assistance to taxpayers or customers that involved the application of tax laws, rules, regulations, and procedures, and which included or was supplemented by one (1) year of direct public contact work; or
  • An associate degree; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
