Daikin Applied is seeking a Lead Development Engineer. The Lead Development Engineer will assist in and lead the development of primary systems and sub-systems of Air-Cooled Chillers, with a focus on the growing Data Center Market. Daikin Applied is looking for a Development Engineer who can collaborate with other individuals across multiple disciplinary fields as a team and drive toward releasing innovative chiller products. Location: Staunton, VA - Hybrid

What you will do:



  • Review requests and needs from Hyperscale Data Center Market as it pertains to Chillers
  • Technical system development of HVAC equipment using engineering fundamentals such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics and mechanical analysis
  • Design, simulate and optimize selected HVAC equipment using available computer software
  • Be an integral part of a fast-paced stage gate development process and report on progress to upper management
  • Collaborate with Product Management to translate requirements into a product for the data center market
  • Lead and support the design and integration of the following subsystems:

    • compression refrigeration systems
    • fans, motors, mechanical drives, and variable speed technologies
    • structural sheet metal
    • refrigeration system piping


  • Give technical direction to create concepts and develop them into a Data Center focused marketable product

    • Collaborate closely with CAD designers to model architecture of new product
    • Collaborate with advanced simulation teams to perform FEA and CFD analysis of design
    • Coordinate with manufacturing and supply chain personnel to ensure the manufacturability of product


  • Provide Manufacturing support for Concept and Prototype unit builds
  • Oversight of laboratory testing; including creation of test plans, direction during testing and analysis of data collected during testing
  • Initiate and obtain agency and regulatory approval status for new products (UL, ETL, CRN, ASME, CE, etc.)
  • Make technical and product decisions throughout the development process
  • Produce technical documentation to support the Marketing launch of new products and product options
  • Provide infant support for newly released product, including:

    • Review of training program documentation
    • Supporting Application Engineering and Sales


  • Assist in various Cost Improvement Goals, proposing innovative ideas and initiating cost reduction and product improvement efforts to increase the overall value of the product
  • Mentor less experienced Engineering staff

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 6+ years of related experience (HVAC, Industrial Process, or similar)
  • Detailed knowledge of engineering, preferably in the HVAC industry
  • PC skills including Microsoft Office applications
  • Basic skills with CAD applications
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • SolidWorks experience

The typical annual base salary for this position ranges from $90,400-$147,400 + 10% bonus in Virginia. The range displayed represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade in which this position falls. Individual base pay will depend on a wide range of factors including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
