PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is skilled mechanical work of the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees of this class are responsible for the performance of skilled tasks in repair work on trucks and passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment, such as payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles and street sweepers.
Assignments are given in the form of oral instructions or general written work orders from a supervisor. Work is subject to review through tests and the operating condition of equipment after work is completed.
The Garage has 2 shifts:
1st shift: 7:00am - 3:30pm
2nd shift: 3:00pm - 11:00pm Mechanics receive an annual tool allowance and are provided uniforms.
Any employee hired as a Mechanic B shall automatically advance to a Mechanic A on their 1st year anniversary of employment provided they possess a #102 driver's license with air brake endorsement. Mechanic A salary currently $36.90/hr, $77,047 annually. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school; and 1 to 3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trade level, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT This is a "General Fund," non-tested position. This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with
Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union.

Hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but instead will contribute 9% of pay to the City pension.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period. Instructions and information on this pre-employment process are included in Conditional Offer of Employment. Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Pursuant to the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, The City of New Haven has a adopted a Drug Free Workplace Policy. The City of New Haven requires a pre-employment drug test, which includes screening for marijuana. Selection Plan Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the
