The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is accepting applications for Laboratory Technician II (Lab Tech II). Lab Tech II's perform physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of water, wastewater, industrial waste, and other environmental matrices.

Examples of some duties include:

*Determining analysis by reading container labels and checking computer-generated backlog reports and worksheets.

*Prioritizing work to be performed using holding times and due dates.

*Processing samples using laboratory glassware and analytical balances.

*Filtering samples using a variety of equipment such as funnels, vacuum, and filter flasks.

*Titrating samples for a variety of analyses using an automated titrator or burette.

*Performing membrane filtration, multiple tube fermentation, and other bacteriological procedures using aseptic technique.

*Performing extraction and concentration of organic solvent extracts.

*Entering analytical results into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) manually or automatically.

*Preparing reagents and standardized solutions.

*Processing laboratory glassware and plasticware according to analytical specifications.

*Receiving samples and completing chain of custody documents.

*Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess:

*a bachelor's degree with major coursework in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field and/or extensive experience working in a water or wastewater laboratory.

*strong motivation to optimize and automate procedures within the laboratory.

*the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

*the ability to maintain a positive work environment and professional relationships.

*knowledge of EPA-promulgated, and other methods, for chemical and biological analyses.

*familiarity with laboratory equipment, procedures, and problem-solving methods used in an environmental laboratory.

*knowledge of the principles of statistics and data analysis.

*knowledge of federal and state drinking water and wastewater regulations.

*knowledge of laboratory QA/QC.

*familiarity with common software used in a laboratory to evaluate data, communicate within EBMUD, and manage electronic documents.

The salary range is $7,748 per month increasing to $8,135, $8,542, $8,969, and $9,417 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

THE LABORATORY

EBMUD Laboratory is a full-service, production-oriented, environmental laboratory using cutting-edge technology to characterize the chemical, physical, biological, and microbial properties of a wide range of environmental samples in support of 1.4 million drinking water customers and 740,000 wastewater customers. Laboratory data is used for regulatory compliance, process monitoring and control, operational and capital improvement projects, and special studies for drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, biosolids, resource recovery programs, etc. The Laboratory operates 365 days a year and is certified by California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) under the stringent lab certification regulatory requirements (TNI standard) for environmental laboratories. The weekend shifts are made available each year to trained staff on a voluntary basis. When insufficient volunteers are available newly hired technicians may be required to work one weekend day per two-week pay period with an associated weekday off and/or assigned around-the-clock Wet Weather Standby shifts.

Requirements

1.A high school diploma, or its equivalent; and

2.Two years of employment in chemical, biological, or laboratory support work equivalent to or higher than EBMUD's Laboratory Technician I class. Completion of 24 semester units in directly related science courses may substitute for required experience. Courses must include a laboratory component.

3.Possession of a valid California driver's license at the time of application and a satisfactory driving record.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. To be considered under the "equivalent combination of education and experience" provision, it is your responsibility to include in your application materials written evidence of employment performed at the level of the typical duties of this position and/or coursework in subject areas directly related to this position.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2025.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each step to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications will be competitively evaluated and those candidates demonstrating that they meet the minimum qualifications of the position will be invited to an online exam that is scheduled for the week of June 9, 2025. The online exam will cover areas such as General Chemistry, Microbiology/Toxicology, Laboratory Calculations, Laboratory Equipment, Quality Assurance, Sample Control, and Laboratory Safety.

4.Those passing the online exam will be invited to an in-person panel interview, scheduled for the week of July 14, 2025.

5.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancies, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

6.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

7.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
