Knife River is looking to add an Industrial Hygienist to our team!

The Industrial Hygienist will support the development, implementation, and continued operation of the Knife River Occupational Health and Hygiene program. This position will be responsible for the coordination and execution of industrial hygiene functions including the collection of samples, audiometric testing, biological monitoring, respiratory protection, and fit testing, maintaining gas testing equipment, physical demand analysis of job functions, investigation of exposures and the implementation of mitigating controls, coordination of medical surveillance and maintaining applicable database and records. This position will require travel to mine sites throughout Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Routinely conduct exposure sampling in the field for known and expected analysis such as respirable and total dust, silica, asbestos, arsenic, noise, diesel particulate matter, and other such potential contaminates.
  • Coordinate with various departments and groups to develop representative sampling plans for similar exposure groups, exposure areas, and specific equipment or processes.
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze data to develop statistical determination and correlation based on sampling
  • Fully investigate action level or over exposures to determine root causes and work with operating departments to determine mitigations following the hierarchy of controls.
  • Observe employees performing tasks and develop physical demands assessments for job description and
  • Conduct audiometric testing and maintain the employee audiometric database and testing
  • Maintain and calibrate gas testing equipment and ensure consumable parts are adequately
  • Review, monitor, and develop policies, standards, and procedures to support the Knife River Occupational Health and Safety
  • Manage and maintain all applicable records for the company Occupational Health


Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Experience in Occupational Health, or similar field.
  • Prior experience in the mining, civil, or heavy manufacturing sectors preferred.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills. (written and oral)
  • Skills in the use of spreadsheet and database programs. (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Self-directed and the ability to execute tasks under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of applicable MSHA and State regulations pertaining to Occupational Health preferred.
  • Ability to analyze data and apply the findings to improve employee workplace health and safety.
  • Capacity to collaborate cross-divisionally to support the alignment of Knife River goals.
  • Maintain records, develop reports, and facilitate inspections related to sampling results.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance by keeping updated with industry and regulatory changes.
  • Must be able to build trust and respect.
  • Must always strive for excellence in yourself, Knife River, and the community.
  • Be able to safely work together to successfully execute the business plan.
  • Must have accountability at all levels in order to deliver quality results.
  • Must be willing to travel.
