About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants are seeking a Project Archaeologist to join our Arlington, TX office. The Project Archaeologist is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program, responsible for managing small to medium cultural resources projects, proposals, fieldwork, research, report writing, quality assurance/ quality control review, and managing client, agency, and tribal relationships.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. The position is based out of the Arlington, Texas office and designed to support our Central Texas & Oklahoma offices.

What you will accomplish

  • Manage and participate in all aspects of cultural resources projects successfully, including budgeting, scheduling, research, fieldwork, report writing, curation.
  • Collaborate with project managers across offices and disciplines to successfully meet client and agency needs.
  • Work with clients and agency representatives for successful project implementation.
  • Assist with technical, high-quality proposals, work plans, reports, and literature reviews, with oversight from subject matter experts.
  • Nurtures and develops client relationships.
  • Oversee and conduct fieldwork and deliverables, adhering to SWCA's Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) program.
  • Supervises personnel in the field, office, and laboratory.
  • Collaborates with SWCA's personnel across role levels and disciplines.
  • Maintains SWCA's high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance.
  • Motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team.
  • Work independently in a responsible manner, resolving project challenges.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipating potential safety hazards

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in CRM in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
  • Experience managing CRM tasks, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
  • Extensive experience with Texas, Oklahoma, and southern plains/southeast regional archaeology and cultural resource management projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to the management of cultural resources (NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA).
  • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours will be required on certain projects.
  • Qualified for listing as Principal Investigator on cultural resources permits in Texas.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology.
  • Experience in oil and gas, renewable energy, and/or transmission business lines is highly preferred.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs, agency requests, and more.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, and agency representatives.
  • Experience leading archaeology crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience as Principal Investigator on Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) permitted projects
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including primary report authorship, with a record of completing technical reports and projects in a timely fashion.
  • CPR and First Aid certified.

An employee in this Arlington-based position can expect a salary rate of $69,092.40 - $88,374.00/yr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
