Responsibilities

State Farm is looking for highly motivated Data Engineers to join two of our DEAM Teams! Our DEAMS (Data Engineering and Management Solutions) product teams are an integral part of State Farm's Property & Casualty Core & Data Services suite, within the P&C Auto and Fire business functions.

This suite leverages data and scale to drive increased insight, agility, and confidence in business decisions. We support continuous learning and innovation as these positions span a broad set of technical skills. Candidates with software development and big data experience along with a willingness to learn while working in a fast-paced challenging agile environment are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities May Include:

  • Possess an understanding of how technology solutions meet our business outcomes.
  • Applies skills, tools, security processes, applications, environments and programming language(s) to complete complex assignments
  • Applies advanced engineering practices to design data products using industry-adopted languages and frameworks
  • Diagnoses and resolves complex problems/issues
  • Provides mentorship, technical guidance, training, and may delegate work to others
  • Maintains advanced understanding in software engineering topics, including classes, functions, security, containers, version control, CI/CD, and unit tests
  • Applies understanding of testing practices including unit, integration, regression, performance and end to end testing
  • Maintains advanced understanding in programming (e.g. Python, JavaScript), and database functionality (e.g.SQL, NoSQL)
  • Maintains advanced understanding in compute environments, including but not limited to Linux, Hadoop, Public Cloud, and containers


Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Experience working with Python, Spark, AWS Glue, EMR Serverless and Terraform
  • Experience with SQL and extracting data.
  • Experience in AWS Data Services such as RDS, NoSql, S3
  • Experience with AWS Application Integration/Compute Services such as EventBridge, Step Functions, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, Lambda
  • Experience with test-driven development (TDD) and CI/CD systems, preferably with Gitlab CI
  • Experience handling Big Data datasets containing mixes of structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience in testing frameworks and tools such as Jest, Puppeteer, Cypress, Mutmut and Artillery
  • Experience in data engineering practices, including ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), data integration, data pipelines and data management.
  • Experience in API design and development
  • Experience in Gen AI/machine learning solutions
  • Experience with Javascript/React is a plus

  • Applies advanced understanding regarding technology trends/changes, best practices, and processes to complete assignments and influence the direction of product solutions
  • Understands, supports, and helps define the vision and direction for the product development
  • Applies advanced understanding of product design, data design and movement and test to ensure quality outcomes
  • Leverages an advanced understanding of the State Farm organizational structure to navigate the organization
  • Provides mentorship, technical guidance, training, and may delegate work to others
  • May take on several simultaneous work stories or focus on a single complex story
  • Champions and leads others to design and develop for exceptional user experience
  • May have membership and engage with technical groups in the organization, like dev guilds
  • Leverages inner source best practices to encourage code discoverability and collaboration across the enterprise

Because work-life balance is a priority at State Farm, compensation is based on our standard 38:45-hour work week!

  • Potential starting salary range: $95,800 - $148,000
    • Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience
    • High end of the range limited to applicants with significant relevant experience
  • Potential yearly incentive pay up to 15% of base salary
