Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The UNCG School of Theatre's mission is to prepare students to be informed theatre practitioners with commitment to creativity, innovation, inclusion, and the advancement of the art form. Our community seeks candidates who are invested in creating communities of practice and care in which access is paramount. We have 17 full-time, professionally active faculty members who serve over 300 students in BA and BFA concentrations and in MFA programs in Design, Musical Direction for Musical Theatre, and Theatre for Youth. The school mounts a yearly season of seven-to-eight plays and musicals, along with student-driven work and other types of performance opportunities. The School of Theatre is committed to creating and developing a diverse, engaged, artistically well-balanced body of future theatre professionals, performers, and teachers.
Position Summary
The School of Theatre at UNC Greensboro strongly encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups who are dedicated to advancing equity and inclusivity in their teaching and professional/creative practice for a 1-year visiting position with a possible second-year renewal at the rank of Assistant Professor rank beginning August 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin May 28th, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.
Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching courses in musical theatre performance for BFA Students. (Coursework may include classes in audition technique, musicianship, and others depending on experience.)
  • Musical Direction of departmental musicals. The successful candidate will begin rehearsals for the School of Theatre's production of Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street on August 11th, 2025. Classes for the Fall semester commence on August 19th with the production opening in early October.
  • Supervising, advising, and instructing the MFA Musical Director Candidate.
  • Advising students, assisting in student recruitment, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • To be a class accompanist when necessary

Minimum Qualifications

  • We are looking for candidates with strong skills in collaboration and communication, as well as professional networks to help bridge classroom experiences and the profession. Applicants should have special expertise in musical theatre as a musical director.
  • MM, MFA in Music, Musical Theatre or Theatre, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Professional experience as a musical director
  • Excellent piano skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in vocal editing, mixing, and production to include recording tracks
  • Professional experience as a musical director on Broadway, off-Broadway, or touring productions
  • University-level teaching experience
  • Demonstrated experience with current theoretical pedagogical trends, including culturally responsive teaching practices
