Summary of Position

We are seeking an experienced full-time hybrid Bioinformatics/Software Developer to join our fast-growing family. We are an engineering and science focused culture with multiple technical teams: Interface, Workflow, Distributed Systems, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and IT.

We're the backbone of the company and work closely with other teams: Lab, Genetic Scientists, Research, Client Services, Marketing, Sales, and Management. Our primary responsibility is to ensure the operations of the lab, scaling its growth, and augmenting its capabilities.

You'll be evaluating operational processes, building solutions, developing algorithms, coordinating projects, and managing clinical genetic data. You will be conducting research using bioinformatics theory and methods, designing databases and developing algorithms for processing and analyzing genomic information, or other biological information. You are expected to learn about bioinformatics, genetics, and medical science to aid the diagnostic quest to improve the lives of the patients around the world. You are expected to perform administration, analyst, scientist, and engineering roles to aid our pursuit of providing next level diagnostic services to patients in need. You are expected to participate in bringing new diagnostic solutions to the market. You will be expected to apply computer science beyond programming.

This hybrid Bioinformatics/Software Developer role at Fulgent is an assortment of multiple professions. It is expected that all roles listed are fulfilled. The individual must have a strong understanding of each role and be able to fulfill them as needed within company projects, team projects, or within individual projects. We're the backbone of the company and work closely with other teams: Lab, Genetic Scientists, Research, Client Services, Marketing, Sales, and Management. Our primary responsibility is to ensure the operations of the lab, scaling its growth, and augmenting its capabilities. Specialized operational, analytical, and technical training for all roles are provided for entry-level hires.

All individuals in this position are expected to join projects, products, and teams within the capacity required of them. They are expected to be, or will become, strong at interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and exchange. This job position requires creative thinking, in-depth technical knowledge, and intellectual analysis. There will be times when you are expected to be project leaders and other times when you will be project members. This allows leaders to practice being followers and followers the opportunity to lead.

Your primary responsibility is to ensure successful operations within the lab. This may require you to solve complex business, scientific, or engineering problems using analytical, procedural, and/or creative abilities. It is expected that you will learn and understand our required clinical standards/guidelines (ACMG, ACOG, CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, HITECH, etc.) so that you may act as advisory specialists to other departments and leads. When capable and trained, it is expected that you will participate in establishing operational policy and procedures to be followed by other departments.

This position is not simple. This position is not standard. It will require a strong foundation within Computer Science, Mathematics, and/or Statistics to be applied within all roles. Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics are not industries within themselves, but a catalyst to other industries. As a clinical diagnostics lab, we are members of the healthcare industry. As a research lab, we are members of the genetic biotechnology industry. As a technology lab, we are members of the solutions, systems, and integration industry. It is expected that you will understand, or learn, genetics, biology, computation, business, operations, management, analytics, and administration. It is expected that you will understand, or learn, their applied forms of clinical reporting, diagnostic procedures, next-generation sequencing analysis, software engineering, bioinformatic annotation, product management, leadership, data science, business intelligence, and high-throughput workflow management.

You will be reporting to your department lead, Howard Dong. It is expected that you will be assisting your department and your department lead towards successful operations and successful projects.





  • Bioinformatics design, analysis, implementation, and support.



  • Data management, data maintenance and database administration.



  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.



  • Identify, design, and implement process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalabilities.



  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
