Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and certified Welder to join our FP&M Physical Plant team at University of Wisconsin - Madison. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing welding tasks to maintain and repair the university's infrastructure, including steel structures, custom fabrication, and stainless-steel and aluminum components. This role involves both shop-based work and mobile welding tasks across the campus, collaborating with various campus partners, including research departments, transportation services, and campus services.


Responsibilities:
Performs complex welding work on structural and critical members. Designs, constructs, and repairs ornamental iron work, iron gratings, railings, heavy door hinges, chisels, wrenches, miscellaneous iron parts and fittings, equipment frames and construction tools to ensure adequate, safe and operable institutional facilities.

  • 15% Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess and verify specifications and calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
  • 15% Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
  • 50% Performs skilled welding work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes
  • 5% Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
  • 5% Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
  • 5% Support Research Projects - Assisting with the fabrication and repair of specialized equipment and structures for research projects
  • 5% Sustainability Initiatives - Participating in sustainability projects, such as maintaining recycling stations, bike racks, and other eco-friendly infrastructure

Education:

Preferred
High School Diploma and the completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Welder as defined on DWD website - https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/weld-fab.htm

"Holds a registration with the State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. A registered welder will have taken and passed, not more than one year before the date the registration application is received by the State of Wi Department of Safety and Professional Services, one or more welding tests in accordance with the following standards:
1. American Welding Society D 1.1, section 4, part C.
2. American Welding Society D1.2, section 3, part D.
3. American Welding Society D 1.3, section 4, part C.
4. American Welding Society D1.6, section 4, part B."


Qualifications:

Required:
- AWS D1.1 Certification
- Completion of a certified apprenticeship program or similar credential programs.
- Minimum of 3 years of welding experience in a similar role.
- Extensive knowledge and skill in carrying out welding operations such as TIG, MIG, GTAW, Manual Shielded Arc Welding, brazing and soldering, and Plasma/Carbon Arc/flame cutting.
- Complete mechanical aptitude and knowledge of mechanical technology and tools.

Preferred:
- Strong knowledge of welding techniques and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- D1.3, and D1.6 Certification.
- Forklift Operator Certification


Work Schedule:

Monday- Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Depending on Qualifications
This has been identified as a Crafts Worker/Trades position. Crafts Workers/Trades worker may elect an increased vacation allocation with a corresponding reeducation to the prevailing rate.
100 hours vacation = $ 55.53
140 hours vacation = $ 54.66
180 hours vacation = $ 53.77
