Co-Op Engineer

Astrion has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Co-Op supporting the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Aviation and Missile Center (AvMC) Technology Development Directorate (TDD) Weapons Analysis and Evaluation Division (MPP) located on Redstone Arsenal, AL neighboring Huntsville, AL.

The Astrion Co-Op will become a member of highly specialized team in the Weapons Analysis & Evaluation Division, supporting the U.S. Army's testing and evaluation of Hypergol, Liquid, Gel, Hybrid, and Solid Rocket Motors, Electric Propulsion Systems, and Air Breathing Propulsion Systems.

LOCATION: Redstone Arsenal neighboring Huntsville, AL

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS Diploma Required.
  • The Co-Op Engineer must be enrolled in and have completed one (1) year of education in an accredited program of engineering study.
  • The Co-Op Engineer must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average out of a 4.0.
  • Must be enrolled in an official cooperative education/training program at the accredited college or university.
  • The Co-op Engineer is an intern position.
  • Must be able to learn to setup, operate, and utilize Data Acquisition Systems to take measurements of units under test.
  • Must be able to obtain appropriate certifications for:
    • Ammunition and Explosives (A&E) Handler/Transporter,
    • Respirator certification,
    • Forklift certification,
    • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement, if necessary.
  • With proper training, oversight, and safety measures, must be able to work with and around hazardous propellant/explosive/energetic materials.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security Clearance (Must be a U.S. Citizen )
  • Must participate in Random Drug Screening as a condition of employment.
  • Good written & spoken communication skills.
  • Must have familiarity with computers, including familiarity with MS Office Tools, such as using MS Outlook to send and receive emails and MS Word to generate reports.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Aerospace Engineering student highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in real or model rockets highly preferred.
  • Greater than 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA preferred.
  • Previous education, experience, and/or training in conducting tests involving hazardous chemicals and/or explosives highly desired.
  • Experience programming and operating LabVIEW Data Acquisition Systems desired.
  • Experience in a Department of Defense test environment preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn how to test and evaluate U.S. Army weapon systems, to include solid, liquid/gel/hypergol, electric and hybrid missile propulsion systems.
  • Conduct static firing of missile tests, to include test setup, operation, tear down, and post-test data analysis. Operate Data Acquisition Systems (DAQs).
  • Utilize DAQs to take measurements. Set up networks for test operations.
  • Troubleshoot networking signals. Solve problems, troubleshoot, and develop solutions in real time involving the use of LabVIEW.
  • Make DAQ design recommendations. Setup, operate, and tear-down various instrumentation for test purposes. Assist with operations involving explosives and hazardous chemicals while using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided.
  • Interpret drawings or sketches. Perform equipment installation, calibration, and support establishment of operational procedures.
  • Provide an array of support for the research and development of propulsion technology.
  • Provide technical support to engineers working in the area of propulsion testing.
  • Work from schematics, diagrams, engineering drawings, written and verbal descriptions or defined plans to perform installation, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting functions on mechanical components and equipment.
  • Perform housekeeping at static test and storage facilities; data acquisition systems installation, checkout, troubleshooting; fabricating and setting up static test fixtures; installing propulsion systems in the static test fixtures; performing instrumentation calibration and test data checkouts.
  • If needed, may cross-train to assist with the creation of custom pressure fittings, repair pressure/vacuum vessels/pump, and perform plumbing operations for missile research, development, test, and engineering efforts.
  • If needed, may assist with machining tasks such as the fabrication of test tools and test fixtures.
  • If needed and once qualified, perform handling, transportation, packaging, and proper storage of class 1.1/1.3 explosive materials and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ensure environmental, health, and safety focus is maintained in Ammunition and Explosives operations.
