Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools is recruiting for a Specialist for the First Nations Program. The position exists to create, implement, and meet the unique needs of our First Nations Studies children in MPS. The position assesses the needs of the First Nations Studies children and community, writes all the grants that fund the various programs, designs the programs, and implements all the projected programs. The position monitors all grant implementation, grant budgets, staff and all designs of the programming.

Qualifications

Eligible candiates must hold the following:
  • A masters degree in a field of education and a minimum of seven (7) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Supervisor/Coordinator/Director of Instruction License (10)/Principal License (51) or ability to obtain within two years.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience working with the Native Community.
  • Extensive grant writing experience, vision for programming, ability to implement and assess programming for First Nations children, high level knowledge of systems, policy and procedure writing, and curriculum and instruction knowledge
  • Computer skills required with experience in word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and supervision experience.
Responsibilities

  • Assess and analyze the needs of the First Nations Studies children in MPS and their families using First Nations design-specific data; namely surveys, student data dashboards, grant work, workshops, community work, and committee work.
  • Source, secure, and manage funding through grant writing.
  • Design academic supports, native education opportunities, language and culture programming, and professional development programming.
  • Create positions, job descriptions, and assessment tools for ongoing evaluation of staff, the program and services provided.
  • Write annual performance reports, middle of the year performance reports, and budget revisions for grants as necessary.
  • Write the yearly Title VI application. Prepare quarterly, annual performance reports, and final reports to the Office of Indian Education for all grants.
  • Serve as Project Director and contact person on all Office of Indian Education, Federal Department of Education grants.
  • Establish community partnerships and build relationships in the tribal entity communities as mandated by the Office of Indian Education, Federal Department of Education grants.
  • Responsible for all fiduciary compliance and grant compliance for multi-million-dollar grants received from the Office of Indian Education, Federal Department of Education.
  • Establish procedures for securing the Indian Student Eligibility Certification Form for Title VI (ED-506)
  • Responsible for training immediate staff to work with First Nations Studies children, training staff about the Woodland tribes of Wisconsin, training staff about the unique academic needs of First Nations children, training staff about the specific historical trauma needs of First Nations children, providing Act 31 training to immediate staff through First Nations Studies, MPS, provide Act 31 training through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instructions American Indian Studies Program.
  • Develop evaluation instruments for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on progress made in meeting specific objectives.
  • Receive monthly progress reports from staff members and use them for progress reporting purposes and for identifying problems and progress in meeting specific objectives.
  • In consultation with the First Nations Studies Parent Committee Chairperson, arrange meetings to involve the First Nations Studies Parent Committee in the ongoing development of the program.
  • Schedule and conduct bi-weekly or monthly staff meetings.
  • Arrange appropriate parent and MPS staff workshops/in-services that address the needs of the First Nations Studies students, staff, families and community.
  • Actively support MPS Five Priorities for Success and Strategic Plan.
  • Perform and complete other duties as assigned.
