Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) for Online and Extended Learning serves as the chief strategist for expanding and advancing North Carolina A&T State University's online education, summer sessions, and workforce-aligned continuing education programs. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Engagement and Outreach, the AVP leads initiatives that ensure N.C. A&T remains a national leader in digital education and lifelong learning.
The AVP will collaborate across university divisions to enhance student success, faculty support, and program growth, working closely with:

  • The University Student Success Office (USSO), the University Registrar, and Office of Financial Aid to ensure online learners receive strong academic advising, retention support, and seamless administrative services.
  • The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) and Instructional Technology Training and Development (ITTD) to advance faculty development and instructional innovation for high-quality online courses.
  • Enrollment Management, Undergraduate Admissions, and The Graduate College to develop targeted recruitment and retention strategies that significantly drive enrollment growth in online and summer session programs.
  • Academic departments and deans and the Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OSPIE) to oversee curriculum/program development and ensure online programs align with market demands and accreditation standards.
  • Strategic Partnerships and Economic Development Industry, government, and community partners to expand continuing education, professional development programs, and workforce training initiatives.


Additionally, the AVP will lead efforts to leverage extramural funding through grants, corporate sponsorships, and philanthropic gifts, while establishing an advisory board and alumni engagement strategies to enhance the Extended Campus brand and secure financial support for students.
This role requires a visionary leader who can expand online and extended learning initiatives within existing human and financial resources while building a scalable, sustainable model for future growth.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Extended Campus at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) provides strategic leadership in the development and management of online, professional, and lifelong learning opportunities. As part of the Division of Academic Affairs, the unit oversees distance education programs, summer sessions, non-credit courses, workshops, and youth summer camps, ensuring accessible and high-quality educational experiences for traditional and non-traditional learners.
Extended Campus collaborates with academic departments and external partners to expand online degree offerings, design summer and continuing education programs, and develop professional development opportunities that support workforce and community needs. The unit also ensures compliance with university policies, UNC System regulations, accreditation standards set by SACS- COC, and state and federal guidelines governing online education.
By fostering innovation and engagement, Extended Campus strengthens N.C. A&T's position as a leader in online and extended learning, enhancing student success and institutional impact in an evolving higher education landscape.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate in education, instructional design, higher education administration, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education, including at least 7 years in leadership roles focused on online learning, workforce development, or continuing education.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, faculty engagement, use of learning management systems (LMS), student success initiatives, and enrollment growth.
  • Proven ability to write and secure grants and other external funding to support program innovation.
  • Experience working collaboratively across academic, student support, and administrative units.
  • Minimum of 5 years leading and developing cross-functional teams.


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A strong record of achievement in strategic online program development and enrollment growth.
  • Expertise in curriculum design, faculty development, and student success strategies, with a focus on adult learners.
  • Experience with accreditation processes, compliance, and licensure-aligned programs (e.g., nursing, education).
  • Demonstrated success in securing external funding and building enduring public/private partnerships.
  • Advanced proficiency in data-informed decision-making, with the ability to apply analytics to guide strategy.
  • Knowledge of workforce development trends, stackable credentials, and employer engagement.
  • Effective leadership and collaboration across institutional units and stakeholder groups.
  • Proficiency in online learning technologies, digital pedagogy, and instructional innovation.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Understanding of marketing, alumni engagement, and business operations in academic environments.
