Job Title: Maintenance Technician II
Department: Wheeler Opera House
Classification: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $27.74/hour - $31.21/hour
Salary Range: $27.74/hour - $41.62/hour

Position Summary: Performs routine maintenance tasks including but not limited to painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, equipment maintenance and custodial duties in support of the Wheeler Opera House.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Building Manager.

Essential Job Functions

Maintenance

  • Performs a variety of routine building maintenance and repairs in the theater and facility, including but not limited to carpentry, painting, drywall and texture, plumbing, electrical work and roofing.

  • Uses many powered and unpowered hand tools in the maintenance and upkeep of a commercial performance venue.

  • Maintains and repairs cabinets, appliances, windows, light fixtures, high and low voltage electrical equipment and associated components.

  • Performs routine preventative maintenance for the building and equipment.

  • Performs maintenance and repair on HVAC and boiler systems.

  • Inspects building and system components and performs diagnostics on motors, pumps and fans.

  • Reads blueprints with sufficient skill to assess and diagnose system issues and effectively communicate relevant information from building automation systems, fire monitoring panels, lighting systems, and data/IT systems.

Public Performance Duties

  • Provides immediate assistance to audience comfort and safety in case of spills, seat issues, or other arising needs during audience occupation of the backstage, lobby, and theatre chamber.

  • Assists with loading dock traffic and vehicle access, and coordinates vehicle impoundment if required.

  • Cleans all public areas of the Opera House-including box office level restrooms, the box office lobby and grand staircase, as well as the Vault Bar lobby and restrooms-after the performance begins and following intermission.

  • Conducts post-show cleaning of the theater itself, including trash removal and general cleaning tasks such as mopping spills and addressing other cleanliness issues.

Custodial

  • Cleans the theater carpets/upholstery, floors, bathrooms, offices, hallways, fixtures, showers, equipment and all other stationary surfaces within the building; including wood floors, countertops and trash removal.

  • Proactively removes snow, ice, and water around the building, including at the main entrance, box office lobby, sidewalks, entranceways, alley, and loading dock areas, addressing safety concerns as they arise.

  • Drives city vehicles as directed and operates Steiner tractor to remove snow.

Record Keeping

  • Assists in recording data and maintaining the records that detail ongoing and preventative maintenance activities.

Emergency Response

  • Responds to emergency calls in order to perform repairs or offer assistance with the needs of the opera house.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: Two years of experience performing semi-skilled work involving: carpentry, roofing, painting, plumbing, heating systems, routine electrical work, outdoor grounds upkeep and/or custodial work.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications:

Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position requires candidate to satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, physical examination, and drug test upon hire.

Position Type and Work Hours:

* Regular full time, hours may vary by theater show schedules and season.

* Evenings/Weekends: Frequently required based on the programming schedule.

Work Environment:

* Indoors: Wheeler Opera House theater and office environment.

* Outdoors/Off-Site: Transportation of waste, recycling and composting to outdoor dumpsters. Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.

* Exposure to Hazards: Frequently exposed to paint fumes, cleaning chemicals, dust, sawdust, and other pollutants. Regularly works with grease, solvents, and other maintenance-related substances. Requires frequent use of ladders, scaffolds, and elevated platforms.
