General Maintenance Specialist

Constructs or repairs structures and provides maintenance support.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Repairs and fabricates structural woodwork and wood equipment; performs corrective and preventative maintenance work.
  • Assists in planning and completing carpentry projects, interprets building layout diagrams or blueprints, communicates project needs to external contractors, estimates costs of jobs, and requisitions supplies.
  • Builds, repairs, and installs woodwork including counters, cabinets, benches, floors, doors, framework, and trim for organizational facilities ensuring completed work conforms to proper procedures, accreditation guidelines, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance including cleaning gutters, caulking windows, repairing furniture, and replacing tiles. Installs plastic laminates, window trimmings, and door locks and closures.
  • Completes service order forms and records work performed, duration, and materials used.
  • Maintains shop facilities and equipment required for maintenance repairs and safety.
  • Maintains grounds and landscaping as needed including mowing lawns, pulling weeds, trimming and planting trees and shrubbery, applying fertilizers and insecticides, maintaining and repairing irrigation system, removing snow from sidewalks and parking areas.
  • Utilizes Boys Town vehicle to transport supplies and equipment to work locations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of a broad range of construction and remodeling practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Mathematical skills to calculate specifications and costs and the ability to read blueprints and understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
  • Skills in installation, repair, or restoration of wood and other construction materials.
  • Ability to communicate in an articulate, professional manner.
  • Ability to organize assigned tasks for completion.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in all phases of carpentry or woodworking required.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record required.
  • Pass an annual Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) check required.
  • On-call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support and must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed required.
  • Pesticide and fertilizer applicator licenses may be required at some locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Vocational training preferred.
  • Other Duties: This job description incorporates the essential functions and duties required for this position. However, other duties may be required and assigned at times and as determined by a supervisor in order to meet the needs of the organization.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity having to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and 100 pounds with assistance and walking, standing, or kneeling for extended periods of time and requires agility to work in difficult locations such as crawl spaces, attics, roofs and closets.May work at heights of 10 feet or more. Significant time will be spent at outdoor construction sites where temperatures may vary from excessive heat to extreme cold or in a shop environment, which includes dust, noise, and some discomfort due to temperature, work with a variety of tools, power tools, and chemicals.
