Job Purpose

The Engineer, Thermal Systems is responsible for supporting the design, analysis, and validation of thermal and fluid systems for the KARNO. This role plays a key part in the product development lifecycle by applying expertise in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to influence engine component designs from concept through certification. The engineer will utilize a range of analytical tools, including hand calculations, 1-D flow modeling and FEA/CFD, to perform thermal analyses, select appropriate thermal hardware, and support component and system testing. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, the engineer contributes to the development of innovative thermal solutions, ensuring designs meet performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements. This position requires strong technical acumen, a hands-on approach, and a passion for advancing thermal technologies in high-performance environments.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will be primarily responsibilities include:



  • Participate throughout the design process to analyze and influence engine components from the design phase through certification
  • Perform thermal analysis using 1D tools, finite element analysis (FEA) and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis in support of new designs
  • Evaluate and select hardware to support thermal systems
  • Execute with guidance the analysis, design, test and integration of fluid systems to meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements
  • Plan and execute component and engine test programs and utilize the results to validate engine designs, systems and analytical models
  • Prepare invention disclosures for technology that provides a competitive advantage
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:



  • Education, Experience and Certifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited college or university
    • At least 2 additional years of industry experience in a relevant Thermal Engineering position
    • Prior experience in the fundamentals of heat transfer and compressible flow


  • Skills and Abilities

    • Deep technical and functional expertise in the areas of conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer
    • Proficiency in thermal modeling and simulations tools such as ANSYS Fluent, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Discovery, ANSYS optiSLang, Flow Simulator, MATLAB or equivalent
    • Experience in developing numerical models and experimental characterization of thermal-fluid systems and heat exchangers
    • Experience in thermodynamic cycle modeling
    • Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
    • Flexible and friendly approach to working in a team environment
    • Highly motivated, passionate, and exceptional communication skills
    • Passion and enthusiasm for hardware development, including working in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design and development
    • Shares critical information, speaks with candor, and contributes constructively
    • Strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to guide and influence others
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems
    • Demonstrated ability for innovative thinking to devise novel solutions to complex, interdisciplinary design challenges





Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.
