Primary Responsibilities

The Project Controls Director is responsible for leadership, strategy and delivery of key initiatives that drive the advancement of HDR's Project Controls Business Class. The objective of the Project Controls Business Class is to foster a community of practice that connects and elevates Project Controls professionals across HDR's six business groups (Architecture, Building Engineering Services, Federal, Resources, Transportation and Water) and positions HDR as an industry leader that is recognized by our clients for exceptional project execution.

The Project Controls Business Class includes professionals responsible for providing the following services, both internally and externally: project schedule development and forensic delay analysis, document management, cost estimating, cost management, development and management of project management information systems, risk management support, claims management, and project/program dashboards/reporting.

Reporting to the Professional Services Director, the Project Controls Director will establish strong partnerships with Business Group, Market Sector, Business Class, Professional Services and Operations Leadership to align the Project Controls practice with HDR's Cross Sector construct and drive the practice to achieve the following goals:





    • Elevate the technical practice and its people.
    • Align with market sectors and operational areas.



    • Build and maintain a company-wide community of practice.



    • Champion the matrix organization.



    • Support exceptional project delivery.



The Project Controls Director will also be responsible for directly supporting project teams to successfully deliver projects. This position will be client billable for approximately 30%-50% of the successful candidate's time

Additional Responsibilities


  • Provide subject-matter expertise to the Project Controls practice to foster an industry-recognized reputation for professional excellence.


  • Collaborate across the organization to elevate the reputation of the Project Controls practice.


  • Support the business group market sectors and Project Controls business class leads across the company in identifying, attracting, hiring and retaining a coordinated talent pool with the technical profile necessary to successfully serve our client base. Work with the market sectors to right-size the practice to allow for commercial success.


  • Lead technical development of Project Controls professionals that drives marketing and commercial success.


  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of technical practices, standards and expectations to accomplish market sector and business class visions and solve client problems.


  • Possess and maintain world-class understanding of technical issues and current professional practice approaches, and package expertise as client solutions within appropriate "consulting" context.


  • Act as "boundary spanner and information broker" to match client/project opportunities originating in the market sectors with our expertise and resources for pursuits and production, and actively drive selection of project staffing, technical direction and standards adherence.


  • Lead work-sharing communications that result in technical excellence and enhanced utilizations both at the local level and nationally.


  • Champion technical productivity and innovation; drive technical achievement and personnel recognition; and recommend, create and monitor technical policies.


  • Evaluate and leverage technology solutions to elevate the Project Controls practice and best serve the needs of our clients.


  • Actively drive open communication of current/projected production needs; and collaborate with Geographical Operations Leadership to influence staffing and expertise levels.


  • Provide hands-on mentoring and team participation to create a bridge between technical resources and market sector and business class requirements.


  • Mentor technical staff in nuances of different market sectors.


  • Foresee emerging technical drivers and influence technical professionals to prepare and help market sectors proactively communicate with clients.


  • Champion a quality culture to all personnel within the Project Controls practice and associated Geographical Operations units.


  • Advocate for professional development of staff and development of production tools: best practices, technical policies and procedures, papers and presentations, Professional Associates credentialing, recognition of technical achievement, practice group activities, and automation tools.


  • Act as role model of our values and code of conduct, as well as professional/ethical/business standards expected by specific clients and required by licensing/credentialing entities.

  • Perform other duties as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Maintains professional or Engineering registration

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Sciences, Architecture, Engineering or related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in related management role.
  • Experience in management and development of diverse teams.
  • Working knowledge of Project Controls practices including scheduling, document management, cost estimating and cost management, project management information systems, risk management support, claims management and other project controls functions.
  • Working knowledge of various project controls software packages such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, TiLOS, Schedule Analyzer, e-builder, Procore, Quickbase, SharePoint, Bentley ProjectWise, Microsoft Power Platform (PowerApps, PowerBI, etc.), HCSS HeavyBid and Sage
  • Works cooperatively with company, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on Cross Sector efforts.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • In-depth understanding of HDR vision, mission and values.
  • Must be a professional and ethical role model.
  • Must strive to implement delivery of business group service area expertise and high-quality products to help further HDR's long-term goals.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
  • 25%-50% travel required.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. Range: $181,580-$259,400
