The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I manages the preventative maintenance and repair of all vehicles and motorized equipment. Employees in this capacity supervise Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technicians and other assigned staff. The duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Maintains stockroom with a parts inventory sufficient to meet the daily demands of the shop;

Develop equipment needs and present those needs to management for inclusion in the annual budget;
Ensure safety inspections are performed on all vehicle recovery maintenance and police equipment;
Ensure all motorized maintenance and police equipment are properly serviced and maintained;
Ensure all work and equipment history is recorded in the maintenance management system (MAXIMO); and
Provide safety training and ensure all staff adheres to safety regulations pertaining to their shop operations.

Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to being on call 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees must provide the agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

The incumbent in this position will report to the Chief Facility Maintenance Officer or other designated official. The current vacancy exists in Baltimore, MD. The eligible list from this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies at other MDTA locations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment. Three years of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

NOTES:

1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)

5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

1. Applicants must possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the state of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.

2. Employees in this class may be required to have satisfied the Heavy Equipment
Maintenance Technician III level of the employing administration's certification program.

3. Employees may be required to obtain their certification in Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery during their probationary period.

4. Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License.

Additional Information

1. Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

2. Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

3. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

4. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
