Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries are seeking a collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking strategic leader to serve in the role of Associate Dean of Libraries for Information Technology and Administration.
The AD assumes the comprehensive coordination of enterprise library technology systems and services, and central administrative services including library acquisitions. Reporting directly to the Dean of Libraries, the AD leads the development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of strategic directions and priorities pertaining to these library services and functions. In collaboration with senior library leadership, the AD participates in reimagining and realigning library services and organizational structures designed to meet the emerging needs of the campus and our partners across the Universities of Wisconsin system and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The AD collaborates with library campus governance groups on campus-wide initiatives and partners with consortial organizations at regional, state, national, and international levels. These efforts ensure access to essential library services and programs while enhancing the reputation of campus libraries within the profession.
In terms of service portfolio, the AD directs the development, programming, operations, and assessment of several campus-wide library services including information technology and administrative services. Within the Information Technology division are IT systems and infrastructure services, library software development, end-user computing services, enterprise library systems management, cybersecurity, digital library preservation and repository services, coordinated resource discovery, and web services management and administration. Administrative services include library human resources, business and financial services, and library acquisitions. A key focus of this position will be sustaining and advancing technology innovation and the continuous improvement of administrative services in support of the Libraries' mission.
The AD has direct responsibility for approximately 50 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff working across these services. The AD leads efforts to coordinate the provision of a coherent staff and user experience across all technological and administrative systems and services on which the libraries and the campus community rely.
Responsibilities:
Serves as a senior academic officer at the institutional level. Plans, directs, and provides administrative, operational, and strategic leadership for one or more recognized academic programs or departments with institutional scope. Represents the academic program regarding strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention; and ensures the integration and coordination of academic programs and initiatives.
- 20% Provides leadership for one or more academic programs by establishing strategic direction and setting priorities that align with the academic directives of the Dean, and ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the university's initiatives, strategic direction, and academic mission; provides direct supervision of department/program leadership and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
- 20% Advises and collaborates with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and/or Office of the Provost on critical issues, represents the functional area of supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various program and/or university committees as directed to address issues
- 5% Directs on-going assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
- 10% Ensures initiatives are effectively using program assessment and data analysis to improve initiatives and strategies, identifies opportunities for improvement, and makes recommendations to the Dean for approval
- 10% Leads special initiatives and/or academic programs that require senior leadership attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
- 10% Builds consensus and develops collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
- 15% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
- 5% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership
- 5% Designs and employs regular cycles of assessment, evaluation, and review to sustain quality of services and programs.
Tasks:
- Provides visionary leadership for the Libraries' information technology and digital curation services, ensuring alignment with the University's mission.
- Provides strategic leadership for the Libraries' administrative services, ensuring alignment with the University's mission.
- Facilitates planning, policy, budgeting, personnel management, organizational and technological development across the libraries so as to ensure appropriate allocation of resources to meet library priorities and goals
- Aligns personnel and services with University and Libraries' strategic objectives, collaborating with stakeholders across the university and partner institutions.
- Leads, implements, and assesses innovative, user-centric library technologies to enhance patron and staff experience.
- Advises on all financial activities, including financial analysis and reporting, budgeting, accounting, and contract development with vendors and other institutions.
- Fosters and sustains an inclusive and welcoming environment for all through the provision of equitable services in support of the university community.
- Champions a culture of professional development, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, fostering a dynamic environment where staff are empowered to excel and innovate in their roles.
- Represents the Libraries at all levels of the university and with our partners across the
Universities of Wisconsin system, the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and beyond. - Supports fundraising and development efforts for the Dean.
- Participates in professional networks and associations, leveraging these connections to stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging service needs.
- Oversees the interests of academic librarian, academic staff, and university staff.

Education:
Required Master's Degree from an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited program or other appropriate advanced degree.
Qualifications:
A minimum of five years of relevant experience is strongly preferred, with at least two years in an academic library setting. This experience should include professional responsibilities demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of a research library's role in partnering and delivering services to advance research and scholarship.
Required Qualifications - Ability to lead librarians, technologists, and/or administrative professionals engaged in delivering services in support of a major research library system. - Demonstrated career progression in professional positions. - Proven track record of effectively fostering partnerships and collaborations that leverage the diverse roles libraries can fulfill in addressing the changing needs of students, faculty, and staff. - Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills. - Evidence of substantial professional engagement and contribution, demonstrating a keen awareness of emerging issues and trends influencing the campus technological and administrative ecosystem and the alignment of library services and programs. -Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive working and learning environment where all can flourish, with experience supporting programmatic efforts to engage a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.
Preferred Qualifications - Proven track record in professional roles, including strategic planning, budgeting, and policy development, and the ability to align resources to meet growing academic and/or administrative needs of a complex institution. - Ability to align IT and administrative strategies with business goals to foster innovation. - Proficiency in fiscal planning, budgeting and financial reporting, and resource allocation. - Demonstrated success in implementing library technology at scale. - Experience building and sustaining campus partnerships and collaborating with information technology and administrative professionals to integrate library services, technologies, and resources with enterprise solutions on campus and beyond. - Strong organizational and project management skills. - Ability to maintain a strong commitment to professional engagement and service, including presentations, publications, and service on campus-wide, regional, and/or national-level professional organization
