Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE) and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve with thoughtful, inclusive and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Position Overview

The Internship Coordinator will provide coaching and advising to students across the department of Rehabilitation and Health Services (RHS) regarding career exploration and development of professional skills in preparation for internship experiences. In support of the academic programs within RHS, the Internship Coordinator will also advise students on the requirements and process pertaining to registering for academic internships.

The Internship Coordinator will serve as a resource to employers interested in hiring students for internship positions and conduct employer outreach to increase the number of internship opportunities available. In conjunction with the Chair of RHS and program coordinators of the various academic departments, the Internship Coordinator will develop and implement a centralized process for the department-wide internship program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and three years' of related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).


Preferred Qualifications

A Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Public Health or a closely related professional field. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of one to two years of experience developing, promoting, and managing internship/experiential learning opportunities for students in a higher education environment.

The position requires a dynamic individual with strong verbal and written communication skills, a commitment to inclusive excellence, and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, alumni, employers, supervisors, faculty, and staff.

Job Duties:



  • Provide internship/practicum support to the various academic programs within the Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services including, Public Health, Health Services Administration, Rehabilitation Studies, and Rehabilitation. Collect and maintain internship/practicum participation data and provide reports for stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with the program coordinators of the Public Health and Rehabilitation programs, create and implement a plan to raise awareness about internships and campus resources available to support participation of students. Develop an internship fair to assist in bringing students and internship sites together for a mutually beneficial arrangement.
  • Develop and provide engaged programming to increase student's awareness of and successful participation in internships/practicum. Provide guidance to students seeking internship and/or practicum opportunities, including providing advisement on the registration process for internships/practicum.
  • Inform students of internship employers, and requirements through scheduled group orientations and individual appointments. Provide coaching to students; provide support and resources to develop effective self-determination and self-advocacy to reach students' academic and professional goals.
  • Maintain a list of relevant internship/practicum sites and update it each semester as needed. House this list in an accessible storage location so interested students can access it.
  • Continue to develop and implement a centralized registration process for internships/practicum in conjunction with the program coordinators.
  • Conduct site visits to current and potential internship sites to evaluate learning/work environments. Provide information concerning the internship program and applications to prospective organizations and agencies that are interested in becoming practicum/internship sites.
  • Create and present orientations for students participating in academic internships/practicum.
  • Improve student access to internship opportunities through employer development activities and collaboration with faculty. Also partner with UNT's Career Center to support student's awareness and participation in internships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
