Extra Help - Student Coordinator, DPI

The Digital Scholars Program is an intensive summer pre-college program which aims to build a deeper and more diverse pool of students pursuing computing and technology-related fields in Illinois. High school students and incoming freshman at City Colleges of Chicago and Illinois institutions can take courses in computer science, data science, electrical and computer engineering, or mobile app development, as well as build college and career-readiness skills, and increase their exposure to and connectivity with Chicago's dynamic tech community.

The Student Coordinator position is a 6-week assignment to support the implementation of educational experiences which are part of the Digital Scholars Program with the purpose of positively impacting student achievement.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Programming, the Student Coordinator is responsible for....

Responsibilities:

Greeting students as they enter the building, and assisting in showing them to classrooms

Engaging with students on a daily basis as a means to establish a safe and inviting learning environment

Supporting classroom and program management, including but not limited to:

o Taking attendance

o Assisting with equipment and/or supplies distribution

o Contacting parent/guardian(s) regarding any concerns (eg: absences, illness, work, etc.)

o Helping to maintain good order and discipline in the classroom

o Escorting students on field trips

o Assisting instructors with any additional needs regarding students and the course

Supporting daily speaker coordination, including but not limited to:

o Greeting guest speakers and escorting them to classrooms

o Facilitating large and small group discussions based on guest speaker presentations

o Assisting with moderating Q&A sessions with guest speakers

o Acquiring feedback from students regarding guest speaker experiences

Taking and sharing pictures with DPI Staff for posting to designated social media

Assisting with breakfast, lunch, and snack setup and breakdown

Assisting in any other program areas needed

Attending and participating in required program events

o (eg) staff orientation, student orientation, the closing ceremony, and the end-of-program debrief

Required Skills:

Demonstrate skills associated with being a life-long learner

o (eg) embrace and model flexibility, adaptability, and a solution-oriented mindset; willingness to model learning and figure out content alongside Scholars; open to feedback; learning from what Scholars have to offer

Required Qualifications:

Expected or earned Bachelor's degree in tech, education, or a related field from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with working in high school or middle grades setting

Demonstrated effectiveness working with minoritized populations of students (eg: Black, Latinx, young women, non-binary, and first generation)

Position Dates, Times, and Location:

The Digital Scholars Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 23, 2025 and end on Friday, August 2nd. The Summer Coordinator is required to be on-site from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Please note that July 4, 2025 is a non-program day in observance of Independence Day.

This position requires an orientation session for all Digital Scholars Program Staff, scheduled for Wednesday, June 4 at 5:00 PM via Zoom. Additionally, this position requires attendance at the Digital Scholars Student Orientation Session as well as the Program Closing Celebration. The Digital Scholars Student Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 at 6:00 PM via Zoom, and the Program Closing Celebration is scheduled for Friday, August 1 at a location to be determined.



Position Funding:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.25 per hour, for up to 140 hours over the duration of the Digital Scholars Program.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a 0%, 900 hour, Extra Help position. The expected start date is May 16, 2025. Minimum starting salary is $16.25/hour, and is commensurate with experience.

We are unable to sponsor an employment VISA or take over sponsorship for an employment VISA for this position now and in the future. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States with no VISA sponsorship.
