Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient service.

The Mechanical Department is in charge of all rolling stock, which includes 150 locomotives, 845 coach cars, 186 highliners, and 530+ fleet vehicles. Mechanical Department ensures that rolling stock operates safely, effectively and efficiently throughout Metra System. Mechanical Department performs all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) inspection, including daily, quarterly, semiannual, annual, Tri-annual, quad, etc., and provides daily cleaning services of all rolling stock. In addition, the Department purchases new equipment, rehabilitates, perform modification, maintenance, and wreck repairs, to all rolling stock to help improve state of good repair and on-time performance.

Reporting directly to the Division Director, the District Senior Car Inspector will conduct on-site inspections of railroad facilities to ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) requirements that includes: test and inspection forms and records including 238 Daily Inspection forms, Blue Cards, Yellow Cards, Cab Signal Daily Test and Inspection forms. Develop, configure, project and maintain required test and inspection schedules to ensure efficient operations for the life cycle of the locomotives, cab cars, coaches, and highliners to ensure compliance with FRA. In accordance with FRA CFR parts 229 & 238, perform field inspections and audits of equipment to detect damage or structural defects. Perform quality control inspections of FRA documents and completed work. Maintain warranty and maintenance tracking records using the IBM Maximo Tracking system. Initiate, maintain, and monitor Security & Emergency Response in accordance with regulations and corporate policy. Must be able to walk in railroad yards and along tracks under train traffic conditions, climb onto locomotives and cars, and see and hear train traffic in worksite area. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Occasionally may be required to go to outlying yard locations during overnight hours. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Requirements
  1. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field, or a journeyman Machinist, Sheetmetal, electrician or Carman, or four years of electrical or mechanical experience.
  2. In addition to #1, must have four years of experience in the repair or inspection of mechanical or electrical equipment preferably in a manufacturing or railroad environment.
  3. Must have knowledge of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  4. Strong analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment.
  5. Ability to complete assigned projects and produce various reports to illustrate results.
  6. Ability to gain cooperation from individuals and organizations.
  7. Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  8. Must obtain 49CFR Part 238 certification within 60 days of hire.
  9. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  10. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  11. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  12. Incumbents must be able to bend, stoop, and climb to perform inspections of rolling stock equipment.
  13. Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
  14. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

Preferences:

  1. Experience with IBM Maximo Asset Tracking System.
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
