Wastewater Management is currently seeking a Senior Maintenance Worker to become part of our dedicated team, where we prioritize advancement, teamwork, and a shared commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities for Senior Maintenance Worker in Pipe & Manhole Repair:
- Team Collaboration & Maintenance Tasks: Works as a vital member of a team to perform various semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection system, ensures all tasks are completed efficiently and to high standards.
- Sewer Line & Manhole Inspections: Conducts visual inspections of sewer manholes and lines, identifies defects and contributes to the timely repair process. Reports any issues to supervisors and assists in coordinating necessary fixes.
- Operate Equipment & Vehicles: Safely operates a variety of tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, large step vans, fleet vehicles, pick-up trucks, and single or tandem-axle dump trucks to support maintenance and repair activities.
- Safety & Compliance: Adheres to safety guidelines outlined by Wastewater Management and DPWES, ensuring compliance with safety programs to minimize risks on the job. Maintains a strong focus on working safely and efficiently.
- Technology & Software Use: Utilizes computer systems and standard office software (including Microsoft programs) for documentation, tracking maintenance tasks, and communicating with the team and management.
- Customer Service & Communication: Provides excellent customer service, communicating effectively with team members, management, and the public when required. Ensures that all interactions reflect professionalism and a commitment to service quality.
- Emergency Overtime & Flexibility: Be available and willing to work emergency overtime, including after hours and weekends, as needed to address urgent repairs or system issues in the wastewater collection system.
- Problem-Solving & Teamwork: Contributes to solving problems during maintenance tasks and collaborates with team members to complete semi-skilled duties essential for the wastewater collection system's upkeep.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with utilities, equipment, and tools necessary for repairs. Strong communication skills, flexibility in scheduling, and dedication to safety and quality work are essential.

Note: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.
* A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in a position that requires a CDL. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B".
- DOT Medical Card.
- VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control and Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of 2 years of experience in the following:
- Maintenance and/or repair of utility systems including cleaning, inspection, and general repairs.
- Operation of utility-related tools and equipment.
- Regular use of desktop or laptop computers.
- Proficiency with computer software programs, including Microsoft Office, GIS, and asset management systems.
Possession of any of the following certifications:
- Basic Traffic Control
- Confined Space Entry
- Virginia Flagger Certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, snow, noisy environments, etc. Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance. This includes lifting, carrying, and pulling hoses, climbing on to units (12' high) for set up and minor maintenance, standing, kneeling or bending for long periods of time. Ability to work around and in contact with raw sewage. Effectively communicate both oral and in writing. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps. Must be able to physically navigate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing/crouching to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by people who weigh 310lbs. or more. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crawl, lift, as well as work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time to manipulate materials with manual dexterity, use of hoses for set up and perform maintenance.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY: Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
