ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Transit & Rail Summer Internship Boston, MA is designed to introduce students into the workforce. The program will build essential professional skills by offering opportunities for hands-on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The intern program is designed to round out participants' academic learning with real world experience and help them explore related areas of practice to find the best fit for their career path.

VHB's Transit & Rail Summer Internship term runs from May - August 2025.

VHB has a specialized and dedicated Transit & Rail Practice providing integrated services for commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, intercity/highspeed rail, fright rail, bus rapid transit, bus, and streetcar systems in urban, suburban, and rural environments. Our team assists transportation agencies through all phases of a project with environmental documentation, station, facility, and right-of-way design; transit/rail structures; rail systems; planning; cost estimation; grant submittals; demand estimation; and operations analysis and simulation. We provide all phases of transit and rail planning, engineering, and operations analysis to help bring these projects to life.

Responsibilities

    Collaborate with numerous VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner
  • Assist in development of planning and engineering solutions
  • Assist in data mining and visualization
  • Perform analysis of data or calculations
  • Perform field data collection and other on-site project support activities
  • Prepare written documents, summarize information collected by others, and assemble reports

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail
  • A strong work ethic with the desire to learn and achieve
  • Knowledge of drawing and mapping tools such as AutoCAD and GIS
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in engineering, planning or a related field
  • Strong interest in transportation, land development, urban design, real estate, environmental, institutional, or energy sector
  • Ability to work on a computer remotely if necessary
  • Ability to travel locally and complete fieldwork if necessary
