Applicants must be at the minimum age of 21 years old at the time of their application. A medical examination, psychological evaluation, and drug screen is required of all finalists. Applicants must be enrolled in a Basic Law Enforcement Training Program.
*Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker's Compensation provisions.
However, any non-permanent employee hired to work 30 or more hours per week for three months or more (cumulative of all positions, and not designated as variable hour worker), must be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, within 30 days of their eligibility. Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions, or designated as variable hour worker - i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, and will be notified of instructions.

Minimum Experience/Education |
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Current enrollment in a Basic Law Enforcement Training Program.
- Ability to achieve Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission within one year of employment.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: |
Upon completion of training, applicant will be able to demonstrate competencies associated with the following duties: effective performance of general patrol duties (emergency response, medical, traffic, and service); the ability to perform effective investigations; an understanding of crime prevention and community policing in a university environment; the ability to effectively use and maintain law enforcement equipment; and the ability to effectively perform telecommunications duties.

Duties and Responsibilities |
Upon completion of training, applicant will be able to perform all essential job functions of a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer including: effecting arrests; preparing investigative and accident reports; exercise independent judgment in search and seizure and arrest situations; operate a police vehicle in all conditions; communicate effectively utilizing the police radio systems; conduct criminal investigations; pursue fleeing suspects; perform rescue operations; utilize various firearms and other use of force tools; conduct foot patrols; conduct surveillance operations; effectively communicate with people in all situations; maintain control when confronted with verbal abuse; administer medical assistance based on level of training; and transport and process detainees. |
