JOB TITLE: Senior Software Engineer (HL7/Interoperability Focus)

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction, participates as a high-level technical expert in design, development, coding, testing, and debugging new application software as well as significant enhancements to existing application software for internal and external customers. Works with technical staff to understand problems with software and develops specifications to resolve them. Develops and/or provides technical leadership in the development of software involving application of new technologies with significant technical risk.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES



  • Serve as a high-level technical expert, addressing problems of systems integration, interoperability, and compatibility.
  • Lead the design and development of complex software systems, ensuring seamless data exchange and interoperability within healthcare applications.
  • Develop new software products or major enhancements to existing software, incorporating HL7 FHIR, CDA, and other interoperability standards.
  • Conduct feasibility analyses for potential projects related to healthcare interoperability and data integration.
  • Define and implement best practices for healthcare data exchange, emphasizing HL7, FHIR, and other relevant standards.
  • Mentor and guide less-experienced software development staff in healthcare-specific software development and interoperability best practices.
  • Stay updated with advancements in HL7, healthcare interoperability, and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance and forward-thinking development practices.
  • Independently design and develop new software products or major enhancements to existing software for internal and external customers.
  • Performs and approves code and test reviews.
  • Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
  • Advances new techniques or advances the state-of-the-art.
  • Demonstrates expert computer science fundamentals such as design patterns, data structures, OOP and software design.
  • Defines software development best practices.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects.
  • Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
  • May act as team leader on complex projects.
  • May participate in the development of test strategies, devices, and systems.
  • Holds self and team accountable for adherence to Agile principles and practices.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.

Experience

Minimum 8 years of software development experience, with at least 3 years working with HL7, FHIR, CDA, or other healthcare interoperability standards.



  • Must have experience with mission critical applications, preferably medical products or devices.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements preferred.


Skills



  • Strong understanding of HL7 v2, v3, FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), and CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) for seamless healthcare data exchange.
  • Experience with RESTful & SOAP APIs, SMART on FHIR, and IHE Profiles (e.g., XDS, PIX, PDQ) for interoperability between EHRs and clinical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Mirth Connect for HL7 v2, FHIR, and CDA transformations, enabling seamless interoperability between EHRs, LIS, PACS, and HIEs.
  • Deep knowledge of healthcare data security (HIPAA), authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect), and regulatory compliance (GDPR, 21 CFR Part 11) for protecting patient/donor information.
  • Proficiency in Azure API for FHIR, AWS HealthLake, and/or Google Cloud Healthcare API for secure, scalable, and compliant storage, retrieval, and exchange of healthcare data using FHIR standards highly desired.
  • Expertise in C# with a strong understanding of object-oriented design.
  • Proficient in front-end development with React, Angular - Angular preferred.
  • Proficient with databases such as MySQL, Azure SQL, NoSQL and/or Redis Cache.
  • Skilled in unit and component level testing.
  • Experienced in software design, patterns, and architecture.
  • Experience with microservice architectures, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and event-driven systems using message buses like RabbitMQ

Target Pay Range:$133,300.00to$166,600.00 -Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data

Target Bonus on Base:10.0%
