Job Description |
The Public Safety Officer provides security, law enforcement, and investigative services, as well as emergency first aid and emergency intervention, for the College campus. Duties include, but are not limited to, patrolling, investigating and reporting on crime and conduct violations; providing first responder medical assistance; conducting interventions with students when needed; providing logistical support for emergency responders; protecting and transporting college property, money and assets; maintaining and responding to alarms and fire response equipment; instructing classes for employees and students on a variety of safety-related topics as requested; and consulting on campus safety initiatives and conducting review boards. The Public Safety Officer serves as a lead for contracted security employees by preparing schedules and payroll information, and performs other duties as assigned by the Director for Public Safety.
The selected candidate will have to be approved by the Maryland State Police to receive a Special Police Commission and Handgun Carry Permit.
Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.

Required Education |
Associate's degree
OR 5 years of public safety-related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. |
Required Experience |
Three years of work experience as a police officer; experience in thoroughly and accurately investigating and documenting crimes and/or College violations; and experience providing logistical support such as opening and closing facilities according to set protocols are required. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities |
- Ability to recognize and react appropriately to suspicious behavior and emergencies.
- Good written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Aptitude to use verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Working knowledge of constitutional and procedural law.
- Thorough understanding of Maryland use-of-force laws and regulations.
- Demonstrates good judgment in deciding whether to make arrests.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including special police, handgun wear/carry, First Aid, and AED.
- Ability to complete annual in-service training which includes handgun qualifications.
- Physical requirements include the ability to frequently patrol campus on foot, including the ability to ascend/descend up to three flights of stairs.

Preferred Qualifications |
Experience in coordinating event security and experience as a Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission (
MPCTC) officer within the last five years are preferred. |

General Weekly Work Schedule |
Monday - Friday, with day, evening, and some weekend shifts. 40 hrs work week - additional hours may be required to cover shift shortfalls and College and Arena events. Final work schedule is determined by the supervisor. |
