Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.22 - $31.65/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $25.77 - $43.58/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties: Provides leadership, oversight, and direct service to the students of UCSB through the daily operations of the A.S. Food Bank. Guides the campus in all of these efforts through Associated Students in relation to meeting the collecting and food distribution on behalf of Associated Students. Establishes avenues of support to the campus - through faculty, staff, and student engagement. Sets procedures for student employees and advises the student Food Bank committee personally. Establishes relationships with local non-profit entities to provide students with long-term relationships to advance food justice. Develops partnerships and stakeholders reflected in a resource guide for students that helps students, staff, and faculty establish other food bank related projects, as needed. Collects and analyses data on the demographics of students using the services-writes and distributes a quarterly newsletter. Assesses and evaluates service and provides students with suggestions and recommendations for further improvements as needed. Researches new initiatives and provides information gathered to the Food Bank committee members.

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years Demonstrated experience or interest in food insecurity, human services, or community engagement.
  • 1-3 years Experience working for or volunteering at a non-profit setting that provides food (i.e., food bank or pantry).
  • 1-3 years Student supervision experience
  • 1-3 years Experience with culturally and academically diverse populations of students with the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and problem solve
  • 1-3 years Experience advising students and student organizations
  • Knowledge of food insecurity and food systems.
  • Understanding of issues of diversity, social justice and challenges faced by underserved populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years Generate awareness and leadership around social justice and equity through the sharing of ideas, information, and experiences.
  • 1-3 years Training and practical hands-on experience.
  • 1-3 years Experience managing a delivery schedule or delivery driving experience.
  • 1-3 years Experience preparing and managing a budget is required.
  • Sensitivity and ability to work with students in a student run organization with annual change in leadership.
  • Must be detail oriented, able to multitask, ability to supervise students.
  • Excellent Communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Strong verbal, written, and computer skills proficiency with Google applications and Microsoft Office.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Food Bank Operations - Responsible for the A.S. Food Bank's daily operations, establishing procedures and guidelines for its student-run operations providing campus-wide direct services. Collects and analyzes demographic data on students utilizing the services to assess needs and identify areas for improvement. Continuously monitors the effectiveness of the Food Bank program through regular evaluations, feedback from students, and consultation with community partners. Accomplishes program revisions, additions, and deletions based on data and stakeholder feedback. Manages evaluation forms, compiles and analyzes data, and reports on program outcomes and effectiveness. Supports and develops the campus direct services within the Department of Associated Students, the UCSB Sustainability Department for Sustainable & Just Food Systems, CalFresh Program, and Basic Needs, providing data analysis and reports as requested. Actively participates in Basic Needs Program meetings to support program development, improvements, and expansion. Ensures that the A.S. Food Bank is adequately stocked through making food purchases, donations, and food drives. Through campus-wide efforts, this position develops, and maintains relationships with local food distribution sources, such as the Santa Barbara Food Bank, and researches new initiatives to enhance the program. Share findings with the Food Bank committee to inform decision-making. Creates and maintains comprehensive student resource lists, detailing campus and community resources for financial, health, and welfare needs. Designs and delivers hunger awareness programs and presentations to engage the public. Campus, city, county and statewide outreach efforts to the student population, ensuring effective public relations for the Food Bank. Serves as the liaison with campus committees on food security and sustainability, contributing to the goals of the Food Security Taskforce and the UC Global Food Initiative. Establishes new initiatives with staff, faculty and students to provide food security. In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Business Services, campus faculty and staff leaders, develops and implements a service-learning curriculum for Food Bank student staff. Regularly assesses student skills, tracks progress, and provides professional development opportunities to ensure growth and development in both job-related and professional skills.
  • 15% Supervision - Responsible for hiring, training and supervising student staff. Collaborates with the Assistant Director for Business Services to ensure proper safeguarding of inventory as a cash equivalent, ensuring adherence to all University policies regarding cash and cash equivalents. Oversees all aspects of inventory management, including sorting donations, purchasing food, maintaining a clean and orderly food bank, stocking shelves, and providing assistance to student clients. Ensures that all procedures are followed to maintain a well-organized and efficient food bank. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding students using the food bank services, ensuring privacy is respected at all times. Trains student staff in basic customer service practices, ensuring that all clients feel welcomed and supported. Promotes a positive and inclusive atmosphere that prioritizes the well-being and dignity of all individuals using the food bank.
  • 20% Advising and Development - Serves as the primary advisor for the A.S. Food Bank Committee. Informs the Chair of leadership development opportunities and recommends relevant programs that align with their role in the Board of Campus Commissioners (BCC). Mediates conflicts and facilitates productive conversations between students, promoting a positive and collaborative environment within the committee. Prepares and manages the Food Bank annual budget for the A.S. Food Bank student committee, ensuring that funds are allocated and used appropriately. Ensures the Food Bank lock-in funds are used in accordance with the ballot language that authorized the funding. Monitors the Food Bank funding expenditures are processed in compliance with UCSB and A.S. policies and procedures. As the office of record for A.S. fund expenditures, ensures that all authorizations for commitments of A.S. funds are approved by the A.S. Executive Director. Provides the A.S. Administration with all necessary documentation for fund management. Leads discussions on appropriate use of donations, student fees, and use of campus based student fees for the Food Bank purposes. Assists the Food Bank committee in establishing eligibility guidelines and overseeing the eligibility of recipients for the A.S. Food Bank services. Offers recommendations for resolving issues and takes the initiative on action items requiring committee or individual attention. Identifies the need for contracts and submits them to the Executive Director for approval. Educates the committee chairs and officers on A.S. and University policies, guiding long-term planning and strategic decision-making. Maintains the records, and provides information through the newsletter inclusive of these contractual agreements. May offer individual or group advising to assist students in identifying and utilizing campus and community resources, particularly for students from underserved populations, to support retention efforts. Encourages and supports student-led fundraising initiatives and food drives, and oversees efforts to solicit food and funds from individuals, corporations, and grants. In collaboration with the Executive Director writes grant proposals to secure funding for the food bank, designing and implementing strategic goals for various fundraising efforts. Provides training and guidance to students involved in these initiatives to ensure successful outcomes.
  • 15% Partnership Cultivation - The A.S. Food Bank Coordinator develops and maintains strategic partnerships to strengthen the Food Bank Program and enhance student basic needs initiatives. This includes building collaborative relationships with both on-campus and off-campus partners to increase the program's reach and effectiveness. Establishes and maintains regular communication with various campus entities, such as cultural and identity-based resource centers, student advising and support centers, Associated Students leadership, co-curricular educators, Financial Aid, Admissions, Orientation Programs, faculty and researchers focused on basic needs, academic advisors, the Educational Opportunity Program, Health & Wellness, Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Mental Health Coordination Services, Housing, Dining, Auxiliary Enterprises, Student Health, Athletics, and Recreation. Collaborates with the A.S. Garden/Farm to support the sustainable production and distribution of fresh produce to Food Bank users, promoting food security and providing educational opportunities around sustainable agriculture. Equally important is the development and nurturing of off-campus partnerships. The Coordinator will maintain strong working relationships with community organizations such as the Santa Barbara County Food Bank, the Food Action Network, Santa Barbara City College, and other relevant local entities. These partnerships enable the Coordinator to provide comprehensive food security solutions, connect students with essential resources, and contribute to building a resilient and interconnected support network for students facing basic needs challenges.
