Overview:

Join a world-class team developing advanced motion control and electronics systems for cutting-edge neutron scattering instruments. We're seeking a Senior Electronics Designer to help design, build, and maintain complex beamline electrical systems-including motion control, sample environment electronics, and control interfaces-at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).

This is a hands-on, high-impact role ideal for a highly skilled technician looking to deepen their expertise in motion control design and work at the forefront of scientific instrumentation. You'll collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and other technical staff across multiple domains.

This position resides in the DAQ Hardware Group in the Neutron Instrument Technologies Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot motion control systems and mentor team members in advanced electronics diagnostics.

  • Lead the design and documentation of electrical assemblies, including chassis layout, wiring diagrams, and light mechanical fabrications.

  • Provide expert-level oversight during fabrication and installation of instrument control systems.

  • Manage procurement, inventory, and quality control of critical electrical assemblies and components.

  • Lead design and testing of prototype systems and platforms.

  • Support instrument maintenance, upgrades, and new installations.

  • Ensure compliance with safety and operational standards (work control, preventative maintenance, etc.).

  • Provide technical support for Data Acquisition and Control systems, with opportunities to contribute to continuous system improvements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in electronics or related field, plus 7 years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Strong hands-on experience in motion control systems and electronic troubleshooting.

  • Proficient in reading/interpreting schematics, technical documents, and manufacturer datasheets.

  • Skilled in using test equipment: multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.

  • Comfortable with basic mechanical tasks and tools.

  • Familiar with Windows OS and Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing layouts, schematics, and electrical documentation.

  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Creo, or SolidWorks).

  • Familiarity with common motion control and PLC hardware (e.g., Galil, Parker, Allen-Bradley).

  • Prior experience in national labs, research facilities, or other scientific/industrial settings.

  • Exposure to data acquisition systems, automation platforms, or beamline technologies.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Occasionally provide support outside of normal hours to meet the 24/7 operational needs of HFIR and SNS. This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the HFIR and SNS.
