The University of Oklahoma Medical Center Adult Emergency Department (OUH Adult ED) is a large academic emergency department located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is a leading provider of emergency care in the region, offering high-quality, patient-centered emergency care to those in need. Holding the highest national rating a trauma center can receive as verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, OUH Adult ED serves as a comprehensive regional hub for trauma and emergency care and receives patients from across the state of Oklahoma and surrounding states.

Our mission is leading healthcare- in patient care, education, and research. Through our combined efforts, we strive to improve the health of all people. As part of an integrated academic health system, OUH Adult ED saw over 50,000 patient visits in 2023.

OUH Adult ED has 36 licensed treatment rooms including 6 trauma bays, eight ED Observation Rooms, and eight vertical treatment spaces. Additionally, another nine trauma expansion rooms were opened in February of 2023 to increase beds to 53 ED treatment spaces and 8 ED observation rooms.

Job Description
General Description: An OU Health Director of Nursing oversees nursing operations and overall performance of their department(s), maintaining nursing practice standards and upholding the nursing code of ethics to ensure the highest quality of safe, patient care delivery. Essential Responsibilities

  • Accountable for clinical care and departmental performance and metrics.
  • Supports strategic initiatives through establishing quality initiatives in patient care delivery that promote a culture of safety, civility and mitigates bias.
  • Develops and updates performance improvement tools, productivity reports, fiscal status and quality statistics.
  • Resolves patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Manages department budget and resources, and understands the organization's financial processes.
  • Aligns behaviors with OU Health values, serving as a role model for staff in professional practice.
  • Representative for the OU Health nursing body, working closely with senior leadership and other healthcare professionals throughout the organization to ensure quality patient care.
  • Serves as a resource for physicians and staff.
  • Fosters an inclusive workforce where individual differences are valued and maximized to achieve OU Health's winning aspiration.
  • Effectively manages the selection, retention and performance of the team through coaching, providing real-time feedback, training and routine recognition practices. Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the achievement of the organization's metrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.

  • Master's in Nursing, Business, Healthcare Administration or relevant field of study required.

Experience: 5 - 7 years of progressive leadership experience.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration:

  • Current Registered Nurse License (RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC) with established residency within 6 months.
  • Specialty certification in RN Leadership required within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of academic medical center structure, service-line structures, institutional governance and hierarchy of decision process.
  • Skills in planning, coordinating and measuring departmental activities.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and managerial functions such as experience with performance improvement tools, using metrics to drive decisions, maintain a budget, report writing and solve practical problems.
  • Ability to leverage resources, including technology, to manage multiple competing priorities and deliver on organizational goals.
  • Knowledge of industry standards to aid strategic decisions, problem solve and calculate risk.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate with individuals/groups.
  • Cognizant of unconscious and systemic bias in care delivery and business operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles to cooperation and to foster harmonious relations.
  • Ability to maintain integrity and trust among leadership and staff.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate individuals, groups/cross-functional teams and provide project management support.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills characterized by candor, openness, integrity and ability to be diplomatic.
